Lorenz Böhler Hospital: Renovation without a shock room - What does that mean for Vienna?

The Lorenz Böhler Hospital in Vienna is facing significant restructuring. How oe24 reports, the venerable hospital will be renovated and a modular part will be added. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to realign the focus of medical care.

In the future, there will no longer be any shock room or polytrauma care for seriously injured patients at the Brigittenau site. This is a significant change, as a single outpatient clinic and a day clinic remain at the site of the former Vienna Trauma Center (TZW). Care for seriously injured patients will be relocated to the AUVA trauma center in neighboring Meidling, where the appropriate infrastructure is available. Particularly noteworthy is the well-equipped shock room, which remains in operation there.

New focus on acute care and day clinic

The AUVA has set clear priorities for future medical care. At the Lorenz Böhler Hospital, the focus is on acute care, day clinics and elective procedures. This specialization is the result of coordinated care planning with the City of Vienna and the Vienna Health Association. However, emergency treatments will continue to be carried out at the Brigittenau location, where an acute intervention room with a direct CT connection is planned.

Three operating theaters, 56 standard ward beds, four intensive care beds and six places for the day clinic are also planned for the new modular building. Progress on the new building is progressing according to plan and commissioning is targeted for mid-2026.

Shock room only active to a limited extent

The shock room in the Lorenz Böhler Hospital has only been in operation on a daily basis in recent years. In the past there have been headlines about fire safety deficiencies that required the house to be moved quickly. These changes lead to positive effects: the center for seriously injured patients in Meidling is being strengthened, while the Lorenz Böhler Hospital is concentrating on other forms of care.

With the planned changes, AUVA has set the course for optimized patient care. Experts hope this will result in greater efficiency and better healthcare. The people of Vienna in particular benefit from this new concept, which responds to the current needs of the population.
