Mega construction site in Vienna: commuters have to do without train from 2026!

We are facing a real traffic gaul: from September 2026 there will be a massive lock between the main train station and Praterstern in Vienna. This large construction site, which will continue until October 2027, not only hits commuters, but also ensures a redesign of the entire transport offer in the city. So reported Cosmo that the main route will not be passable for over 14 months, which is a fundamental challenge.

The construction site is part of a comprehensive modernization program that has been in full swing since 2023. Here, various buildings are being renovated, including the viaducts in Leopoldstadt and Landstrasse as well as average walls. The platforms at the Belvedere and Rennweg district are also extended to meet the requirements of growing commuter traffic.

Alternative traffic concepts

The Viennese lines and ÖBB have set themselves the goal of developing an alternative traffic concept. The classic rail replacement traffic with buses cannot be implemented in this form, which is why commuters should switch to the urban transport system. Tact seals and the reinforcement of the tram line o are planned, as well as the extension of line 18 to the Ernst Happel Stadium, reports S-Bahn Vienna.

In addition, a direct shuttle is set up between Vienna-Meidling and the U4 station Längenfeldgasse. During the main barrier, the Vienna St. Marx stop will act as a Wendebahnhof, where the S7 from Vienna-Schwechat Airport ends and starts. In order to minimize the effects of the lock, those responsible organize special measures to relieve commuting.

A look at the larger picture

As part of the 2nd Viennese rail infrastructure package, which provides for massive investments of 2.4 billion euros by 2034, rail traffic around Vienna is to be improved. According to the city of Vienna, S-Bahn traffic between Floridsdorf and Meidling is compressed to a 2.5-minute cycle. In addition, there are new stops and a more efficient rail infrastructure, which is specially designed for longer trains with more seats, according to another source of the city of Vienna.

The preparatory work in the section between Vienna-Floridsdorf and Praterstern has already started this summer. From summer 2026, the digital train protection system ETCS will be gradually put into operation in the northern area, which also represents a large step towards modernization. These comprehensive measures should not only meet commuter flows, but also increase the attractiveness of public transport in the region.

But until it is time, more than a real mobility marathon will be necessary to master the challenges of the coming months. The Viennese and commuters should prepare well and keep an eye on the information about the traffic situation, because changes are in the house! Hold ready - the Vienna public transport system will be turned upside down in the next few years.
