Mega construction site in Vienna: Commuters will have to do without trains from 2026!

A real traffic nuisance is ahead of us: From September 2026 there will be a massive closure between the main train station and Praterstern in Vienna. This major construction site, which will last until October 2027, will not only affect commuters, but will also result in a redesign of the entire transport offering in the city. So reported Cosmo that the main route will not be passable for over 14 months, which represents a fundamental challenge.

The construction site is part of a comprehensive modernization program that has been in full swing since 2023. Various structures are being renovated, including the viaducts in Leopoldstadt and Landstrasse as well as cutting walls. The platforms at the Belvedere and Rennweg districts will also be extended to meet the demands of growing commuter traffic.

Alternative transport concepts

Wiener Linien and ÖBB have set themselves the goal of developing an alternative transport concept. The classic rail replacement services with buses cannot be implemented in this form, which is why commuters should switch to the urban transport system. Increased frequency and reinforcement of tram line O are planned, as is the extension of line 18 to the Ernst Happel Stadium, reports S-Bahn Vienna.

In addition, a direct shuttle will be set up between Vienna-Meidling and the U4 station Längenfeldgasse. During the main closure, the Vienna St. Marx stop will act as a turning station, where the S7 from Vienna-Schwechat Airport both ends and starts. In order to minimize the effects of the closure, those responsible are organizing special measures to relieve commuter traffic.

A look at the bigger picture

As part of the 2nd Vienna rail infrastructure package, which provides for massive investments of 2.4 billion euros by 2034, rail traffic around Vienna is to be improved. According to the City of Vienna, S-Bahn traffic between Floridsdorf and Meidling will be increased to a 2.5-minute frequency. There will also be new stops and a more efficient rail infrastructure that is specifically designed for longer trains with more seats, according to another source from the city of Vienna.

Preparatory work on the section between Vienna-Floridsdorf and Praterstern began this summer. From summer 2026, the digital train control system ETCS will gradually go into operation in the northern area, which also represents a major step towards modernization. These comprehensive measures are intended not only to meet commuter flows, but also to increase the attractiveness of public transport in the region.

But until that happens, it will take more than a real mobility marathon to master the challenges of the coming months. Viennese and commuters should prepare well and keep an eye on the information on the traffic situation, because changes are coming! Be prepared – Vienna’s public transport system will be turned upside down in the next few years.
