World record in Herrenberg: The largest living wind turbine in the world!

What is brewing in Herrenberg? On June 29, 2025, the Swabian city will be the scene of an impressive world record attempt in which several hundred people want to create the “largest living wind turbine in the world”. The event starts at 3 p.m. on the festival lawn and preparations are in full swing. “We want to set a new record and show that renewable energies are on the rise,” explains Klaus Weingärtner from the citizens’ initiative Rückwind Herrenberg. Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports on the dynamics of this project, which also serves to promote wind power as a clean energy source.

The existing record is from 2017 and comes from Vienna, where over 260 people formed a wind turbine silhouette. But the approach in Herrenberg is more innovative, because the extraordinary wind turbine should actually move! For this purpose, a sophisticated system of ropes was developed that guarantees the shape and spacing of the rotor blades. This test run, which took place last Sunday, was followed by some adjustments to the choreography in order to ensure that everything was perfect on the big day. According to schwäbischer Zeitung, there will also be an exciting supporting program: Games, food, drinks and live music are planned from 1 p.m. to appeal to the whole family.

Involved in a major project

Several initiatives are involved in the preparations, including Schwanzwind Herrenberg, Windkraft BB and the Rottenburg energy cooperative. Together they have formed a strong network to involve the local population more closely in the energy transition process. “Citizen participation is the key to a successful energy transition,” emphasizes Weingärtner. [Wiwin](https://wiwin.de/blog/buerger participation-erneuerbare-energien) emphasizes that citizens should actively participate in projects in order to increase acceptance of renewable energies.

In this context, the numbers are very promising: The energy cooperative in Herrenberg has over 40,000 members and already operates over 400 wind turbines. Interested parties can purchase cooperative shares here in order to benefit from annual dividends and purchase green electricity at reduced prices. With offers like these, you can understand why people are committed to wind power and renewable energies with such positive feelings.

Invitation to the cycling rally

In order to bring the participants to the festival meadow, cycling tours are organized from several starting points. This is not only environmentally friendly, but also a great way to come together as a community and support the project together. Further information about the rally can be found on the Windkraft BB website, where the conditions of participation can also be found.

So, off to Herrenberg on June 29th! Let's make history together! It's not just about a world record, but about a strong message for the future of energy production in our region.
