Herrenberg cracks world record with lively wind turbine and 598 participants!

In Herrenberg, an exciting event took place on June 29, 2025, which will go into the history books: 598 people have set up a new world record for the largest rotating human wind turbine. This significantly exceeded the previous record from 2017 in Vienna, which was set up with 260 participants. This lively wind turbine actually turned, unlike the static counterpart in Vienna. The campaign was organized by various wind power initiatives from the region, including the Lückwind Herrenberg and ProWindkraft Neckar-Alb, all of which pursued a common goal: to set a sign of wind power that is considered a clean and inexpensive energy source of the future. This is reported by the krzbb.de .

The record attempt was the result of months of preparations. A sophisticated system was already tested for a dress rehearsal 14 days before the event. A 30 -meter chalk circle marked the rotor area, while a 25 meter long trapeze provided additional orientation. In order for the participants not only feel safe, but also visually deliver an impressive picture, they received colored bracelets: 100 green, yellow and blue for the wind turbine wings and 200 white for the tower. Even 98 participants without bracelets realized their commitment to wind power. A drum rhythm helped to set the rotors in a synchronous way.

a festival for all

The event offered visitors more than just attempted records. A supporting program with speeches and music created a festive atmosphere. Shadow dispenser, foggy showers and and drink stands provided a welcome cooling in the summer heat. Environment Minister Thekla Walker paid tribute to the success of wind power in Baden-Württemberg and reported that 800 wind turbines are already in operation in the region. In addition, another 1,200 wind turbines are being planned.

The event was part of a broader discussion about renewable energies and climate change. In Böblingen and the surrounding area, wind power is controversial, and the initiatives rely on citizen participation in order to increase acceptance for wind power projects. The regional plan for wind power in Stuttgart was only decided in April 2025. A wind farm in the district of Böblingen was planned in a failed inter -municipal project.

a global trend

The record in Herrenberg is part of a global movement towards renewable energy sources. According to a report by the International Agency for Renewable Energies (Irena), the global electricity generation from renewable energies achieved a record level in 2024 with an extension of 585 gigawatt, whereby the renewable energies made 92.5 percent of the total capacity expansion. However, the growth of wind power has experienced a decline, which shows that there is still a lot of scope upwards. At this point, integration into regional projects such as that in Herrenberg is particularly important.

The lively wind turbine in Herrenberg is not only a new world record, but is also a strong symbol for the future of wind power and the urgent need to invest in renewable energies. The day was an impressive demonstration of the engagement of the citizens for a clean and sustainable energy future, as well as the Tageschau reported.
