Herrenberg breaks world record with living wind turbine and 598 participants!

On June 29, 2025, an exciting event took place in Herrenberg that will go down in history: 598 people set a new world record for the largest rotating human wind turbine. This significantly exceeded the previous record from 2017 in Vienna, which was set with 260 participants. This living wind turbine actually rotated, unlike its static counterpart in Vienna. The campaign was organized by various wind power initiatives from the region, including Schwanzwind Herrenberg and ProWindkraft Neckar-Alb, all of which pursued a common goal: to set an example for wind power, which is considered a clean and cost-effective energy source of the future. This is reported by the Krzbb.de.

The record attempt was the result of months of preparation. A sophisticated system was tested in a dress rehearsal 14 days before the event. A 30-meter chalk circle marked the rotor area, while a 25-meter-long trapezoid provided additional orientation. So that the participants not only felt safe, but also made a visually impressive impression, they received colored bracelets: 100 green, yellow and blue ones for the wind turbine blades and 200 white ones for the tower. Even 98 participants without wristbands realized their commitment to wind power. A drum rhythm helped set the rotors moving synchronously.

A celebration for everyone

However, the event offered visitors more than just the record attempt. A supporting program with speeches and music created a festive atmosphere. Shade, mist showers and drink stands provided a welcome way to cool off in the summer heat. Environment Minister Thekla Walker praised the success of wind power in Baden-Württemberg and reported that 800 wind turbines are already in operation in the region. A further 1,200 wind turbines are also being planned.

The event was also part of a broader discussion about renewable energy and climate change. Wind power is controversial in Böblingen and the surrounding area, and the initiatives rely on citizen participation to increase acceptance of wind power projects. The regional plan for wind power in Stuttgart was only decided in April 2025. In a failed intermunicipal project, a wind farm was planned in the Böblingen district.

A worldwide trend

The record in Herrenberg is part of a global movement towards renewable energy sources. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), global renewable energy generation reached a record level in 2024 with an addition of 585 gigawatts, with renewables accounting for 92.5 percent of total capacity expansion. However, the growth of wind power has declined, showing that there is still a lot of room for improvement. At this point, integration into regional projects like the one in Herrenberg is particularly important.

The living wind turbine in Herrenberg not only represents a new world record, but is also a strong symbol of the future of wind power and the urgent need to invest in renewable energies. The day was a powerful demonstration of citizens' commitment to a clean and sustainable energy future, as well as the daily news reported.
