Aggressive man threatens taxi driver: arrested after escaping in Vienna!

A harsh wind is currently blowing in Vienna-Margareten because the police have arrested a 50-year-old man after an attempted escape maneuver. According to reports from 5min.at, there was a police operation on August 27, 2025, around 8 a.m., after the man, who was noted as being notoriously aggressive, made death threats to an employee of a bar. He apparently put the employee under so much pressure that he was forced to call the police emergency number. The suspect then fled, but was caught by officers a short time later near the bar.

During the investigation it turned out that the man had “forgotten” to pay for two taxi rides the night before. After the arrest, the 50-year-old's mental health was so striking that an interrogation was initially not possible. The Vienna public prosecutor's office then ordered that he be placed in a prison. The case remains under investigation and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward to investigate the man's aggressive behavior.

Another example of aggressiveness in traffic

But it's not just the case in Margareten that is causing excitement in the city. Another incident from Vienna-Favoriten shows that aggressive behavior is no stranger to road traffic. A 21-year-old driver without a driving license was noticed by a motorcycle police officer on June 30, 2025 when he drove recklessly on Triester Street. During a subsequent police stop, he became stubborn and physically resisted. Due to his aggressive attitude, several police patrols had to be called to help. He also escaped temporarily, but then found shelter in the footwell of a taxi, which betrayed the crazy driver to the police.

The complications for the young man did not end there. After consultation with the Vienna public prosecutor's office, he was released, but the investigation is ongoing due to resistance to state authority and several traffic offenses. This has put him in a difficult position; a heartfelt “Good job” sounds different.

The security situation in Vienna

The incidents described are part of a worrying trend in Vienna. According to the Vienna crime index, which shows an increase in crime after a decline during the Covid period, the city performs rather poorly compared to other European metropolises. Numbeo's crime index shows that Vienna is one of the less safe cities in Europe. This is not without consequences: experts recommend an increased police presence in order to both increase security and strengthen the population's sense of security.

It remains to be seen whether the incidents caused by aggressive behavior ultimately serve as an indication of a deeper problem in the city's security concept. What is certain, however, is that the issue of “security in Vienna” remains high on the agenda after several incidents like these.

These developments make it clear that borderline situations can always arise. Whether taxi drivers or passers-by, everyone is invited to remain vigilant. It is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the safety of the city.
