Austrian Post opens new self-service branch in Liesing!

There is new news from the world of self-service branches in Vienna: Austrian Post has opened a brand new 24/7 branch at Ketzergasse 56 in Vienna's 23rd district. This innovative branch form is intended to primarily benefit the approximately 7,000 households in Siebenhirten. With a spacious area of over 200 square meters, the new station offers numerous advantages for residents and commuters.

The new self-service branch is equipped with an impressive number of 850 collection boxes where packages can be picked up or returned 24 hours a day. Customers will also find two shipping stations that make franking and sending packages as well as processing returns easier. At the opening, district leader Gerald Bischof emphasized the significant improvement in the infrastructure in Siebenhirten and the positive development that this new opening brings with it. “There’s something important for our neighborhood,” says Bischof.

Expansion of the self-service offering

However, the branch in Liesing is only part of a larger plan by Austrian Post. By 2025, a total of around 25 new self-service branches are to be built in Vienna, supplemented by ten large post offices and around 3,000 new post boxes, which will enormously expand the range of services in the capital. The popularity of self-service stations becomes clear: in 2024, almost nine million parcels were processed via these stations in Vienna. A new self-service zone with around 130 square meters was also recently opened in the 5th district of Margareten, which includes 700 collection boxes, two shipping stations and an ATM.

The post office currently operates 86 post offices, 25 postal partners and 24 self-service branches in Vienna. The numerous collection boxes - over 62,000 - and around 210 shipping stations paint a picture of a comprehensive and well-thought-out service that puts the needs of customers first.

Technological advances and new challenges

Although the post office is making great progress with its self-service offerings, a survey of 400 entrepreneurs shows that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Austria is “alarmingly low”: 60% of companies are not yet using this technology. Many entrepreneurs feel put off by the challenges of data security, which also gives the Swiss Post reason to send signals towards less bureaucracy.

The company management under Post CEO Walter Oblin has set itself the goal of further advancing digitalization. An example of this is the use of AI to assess damage in accidents, where delivery drivers take photos of damage to manufacturing facilities and the damage is assessed by AI. The Post Office's Business Solutions department is also keen on innovation and currently employs around 1,000 IT experts and a further 70 employees in Greece.

The annual turnover of Business Solutions is already 50 million euros. Overall, it is clear that Austrian Post is not only expanding its self-service offerings, but also wants to focus more on technological solutions in the future in order to meet the challenges of the market.
