New tram line 12: Just in time for the start of school in Vienna!
A fresh wind is blowing through the streets of Vienna, and not just because of the start of the school year! The new tram line 12 starts on September 1st. This new connection will prove to be a real hit because it connects the districts of Josefstadt, Alsergrund, Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt. A true connection miracle awaits!
The entire route of line 12 is an impressive 7.2 kilometers long, of which 2.2 kilometers were newly built. This leads from the U6 station Josefstädter Straße via some important junctions such as the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and the U4 Friedensbrücke to its end point in Hillerstraße. On the way there there are also numerous transfer options to the subway lines U1, U4 and U6 as well as to the S-Bahn and other tram and bus lines. A total of 25 stops are served, five of which have been completely redesigned. MyDistrict reports on a continuous range of trips every 8 minutes, which up to 16,000 passengers could use every day.
Green investments and connectivity
But that's not all! The city has invested heavily to improve the quality of life along the route. This includes 100 new trees, 230 meters of green track and over 2,000 meters of new cycle paths. A new two-way cycle path in the Nordbahnviertel with a length of 525 meters and a one-way cycle path of 270 meters are being planned. Such measures are highly appreciated by the district leaders, who are pleased about the improvement in connections. However, there are also critical voices regarding the usefulness of this new line, especially due to the parallel bus lines, which could possibly appear superfluous.
To meet demand, the bus network will also be adapted: line 11B will be integrated into line 11A, and additional amplifier buses are being planned in the central section to optimize connections. Vienna lines emphasizes that these measures aim to further improve mobility in the city.
Public transport in Vienna
How important a well-developed transport network is for a city like Vienna is also reflected in the many options available to city residents and tourists. The Wiener Linien offers a comprehensive service with five subway lines, an S-Bahn, trams and buses, all of which run reliably through the city. The tariffs are affordable and vary depending on the length of use. A single trip costs 2.40 euros, while a day ticket is available for 8.00 euros. Vienna Tourist Information also introduces the popular City Passes, which offer additional convenience, including discounted or free admission to numerous attractions.
In summary, the introduction of the new line 12 on September 1st will not only strengthen the tram network, but also improve the quality of life in an unprecedented way. It remains to be seen whether all the plans will come to fruition - but the anticipation among the Viennese is already palpable! Now all that's left to do is test out the new connections on the first day of school.
