Dung area Dresdner Straße: permanently closed, new apartments planned!

The closure of the Zwischenbrücken manure site on Dresdner Straße finally makes room for new residential buildings. After the square has not been used since 2020, the urban development committee has decided on plans for a new building to be built on the site. The city of Vienna will therefore permanently close the manure site, which causes mixed feelings among the residents. MyDistrict reports that the legal basis was created through resolutions of the zoning and development plan in 2018 and 2020. A new residential project will not only provide space for 200 apartments, but also integrate mixed use with retail space on the ground floor and medical practices on the first floor.

The Vienna Greens are dissatisfied with the new plans. They criticize the planned “Grätzlmistplatz” on Innstrasse, which is supposed to take over waste disposal for districts 2 and 20, as a “car-centric mega-muck place”. It is feared that the new location will displace subsidized housing and affect the quality of life of local residents. According to a survey in the district, 83 percent of those surveyed would like the existing manure site to be maintained and renovated.

Criticism and resistance

In addition to the Greens' dissatisfaction, the KPÖ in Brigittenau has also initiated a petition to preserve the manure site. District councilor Matthias Kaltenböck criticizes the lack of renovation and use of the square, while illegal dumping of waste has been an ongoing problem since its closure. On March 13, the district council passed a unanimous decision aimed at modernizing and reopening the manure site. The MA 48 is still looking for a new location for a manure site, with the area near the Nordbahnhof on Innstrasse being considered. However, this proposal is met with resistance from citizens.

The City of Vienna has emphasized that the dedication process for the new residential projects was carried out in accordance with the Vienna Building Code and that several information events were held for public inspection. The plans stipulate that listed objects, such as the former mortuary, will be preserved and that construction is not scheduled to begin until 2029 at the earliest. A manure site has also been planned in Seestadt, but there are delays because the area division has not yet been completed. courier reports that the rezoning of the site still needs the approval of the local council before construction work can begin.
