The Augarten Bridge over the Danube Canal will soon shine in new splendor! From July 1, 2025, the listed building will be reopened to traffic. The comprehensive renovation, which began in the summer of 2024, aimed to ensure the bridge's safety for decades to come. As 5min.at reports, the Augarten Bridge was built in 1931 and is one of the most important buildings in Vienna's city history.
The renovation work included thorough repairs to railings, main beams, cross beams and road crossings. Monument protection was carefully taken into account in order to preserve the historical substance of the building. The result is not only a safer structure, but also a visual upgrade - the bridge shines in a new light. City Councilor for Mobility Ulli Sima emphasizes that these measures will not only increase safety, but also increase the attractiveness of cycling in Vienna.
Improvements for cyclists and pedestrians
A central element of the renovation is the new two-way cycle path, which, with a width of 3.20 meters, can now be used more comfortably for cyclists. The sidewalks were also widened to 2.65 meters, creating more space for pedestrians. Overall, the width of the cycle paths and sidewalks is now an impressive 5.85 meters, structurally separated from the road. The new paths are also closely connected to the existing cycling infrastructure in Obere Donaustraße and Untere Augartenstraße. District head Alexander Nikolai described the building as a cultural heritage that should be preserved for future generations. The opening of the bridge will not only create a better connection between the districts, but is also intended as a model for future infrastructure projects in Vienna.
