Aggressive beating in Leopoldstadt: woman (39) arrested!

A violent incident occurred in Vienna-Leopoldstadt on October 26, 2025, which once again brought the problem of domestic violence into the spotlight. The argument between a 49-year-old man and his 39-year-old partner began around 12:30 p.m. and escalated into a physical fight. The argument, which was apparently triggered by mutual jealousy, led to both partners hurting each other. The police were alerted because the situation in the apartment became dangerous.

Tragic scenes unfolded when officers tried to enter the apartment. The aggressive 39-year-old was waiting at the door and refused to allow the police officers entry. Eventually the police had to push the woman aside so they could enter the apartment. She resisted during the operation and was subsequently temporarily arrested. The 49-year-old, on the other hand, was cooperative. He was given a ban on entering and approaching the property as well as a temporary ban on weapons. During an alcohol test, both participants were found to have a blood alcohol level of around 1.2 per mille. The police are now considering legal action and possible charges of mutual bodily harm. It is a serious signal to always seek help early and avoid outbreaks of violence, according to the police.

Domestic Violence: A Widespread Problem

Domestic violence is an issue that is widespread not only in Austria, but also in other countries such as Switzerland and Germany. Around 20,000 domestic violence crimes are registered in Switzerland every year, although the number of unreported cases may be twenty times as high. In 2023, around 181,000 victims of domestic violence in Germany were female, which illustrates the urgency of the issue. Domestic violence is often rooted in personal or family relationships and is often only recorded in cases registered by the police, although there is a high level of unreported cases. The shame and fear of talking about it prevents many victims from seeking help. Support from family, friends and professionals can make a crucial difference.

An alarming fact: among the victims of domestic violence, women are almost always affected. Domestic violence includes physical and psychological attacks, with the most common offenses being intentional simple bodily harm. Even though men are often perceived in public as the main victims of violent crime - around 70% were men in 2023 - the risk for women in intimate relationships is particularly high. Helplines such as the “Violence against Women” helpline on 116 016 are available at any time and are an important first step towards support.

At home in Vienna we should ask ourselves again: How safe are our women? Such incidents make it clear that domestic violence has no social background and requires immediate attention. The appeal to everyone is: In the event of conflicts, don't look away and seek help early on!
