Groundbreaking ceremony celebrated for modern high school in the Village in Third!
September 4, 2025 will be the date of a significant milestone in the city's educational development in Landstrasse. A ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony marked the official start of the construction of a new general secondary school (AHS) in the trendy “Village im Third” urban district. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos) was there to give the project his blessing. The construction work is being carried out by the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG).
The new school will have space for over 1,000 students and offer two different levels of education - the grammar school and the secondary school. The current project costs amount to an impressive 50 million euros, a significant increase from the originally estimated 24.2 million euros. The completion date is scheduled for mid-2025, and people are already looking forward to the topping-out ceremony, the ceremonial completion of the shell, in about a year.
Innovative architecture and modern learning concepts
The planned school building will cover a generous 12,000 square meters, including cluster units for the lower grades and a department system for the upper grades. These architectural features are intended to support learning: four classrooms are grouped around open learning zones that promote exchange and group work. There is also excellent provision for the self-responsibility of upper school students.
The school architecture ensures active balance with five sports areas. Two sports fields on the roof and three gyms on the ground floor offer plenty of space to move around. Another architectural highlight is the external staircase that connects the terraces on all floors.
Sustainability in focus
The architectural firm “Kronaus Mitterer” placed great emphasis on sustainability during the design. Among other things, 24 geothermal probes and photovoltaic systems will be installed, which will contribute to more environmentally friendly use of the school. The school will have a spacious forecourt on Otto-Preminger-Straße, which will act as the main entrance and serve as a social interface for the students.
At a time when Vienna has a constantly increasing need for compulsory school places, this new school is an example of innovative solutions that are intended to overcome the challenges of the modern educational landscape. “Involving those affected right from the start is crucial,” emphasizes the city. Young people, teachers, parents and residents are actively involved in the construction process in order to create a sustainable and needs-based infrastructure.
After completion, around 100 teachers are planned for the new AHS, who will work with the students to ensure a lively learning atmosphere. District leader Erich Hohenberger (SPÖ) has already expressed great joy about the project and the associated development of educational offerings in the district.
A look at the numbers shows that the AHS Otto-Preminger-Straße in the “Village in the Third” could become not just a building, but a central place for education, sport and community. Vienna remains innovative and is taking big steps into the future.
