The discovery was made by his mother, who had borrowed the car and, due to her phobia of snakes, quickly fled to a nearby tobacco shop when she noticed the snake. Luckily for her, a passer-by named Renate immediately informed the emergency services, who arrived with special pliers and freed the reptile from the vehicle unharmed.
After the rescue operation, the boa was taken to an animal shelter. It is suspected that the animal was released near the cemetery because snakes are extremely rare there, explains a spokesman for the Vienna cemeteries. The region is known for its lizards, and the 46 municipal cemeteries are home to more than 500 insect, 80 bird and 300 plant species. Werner Stangl, a reptile expert, emphasizes that humans are not part of the boa's prey pattern; their preference is for small animals such as mice and rats.
