Traffic jams and diversions: construction site chaos around the stadium bridge!

In Vienna, drivers and commuters are currently facing a number of challenges: The Renovation of the stadium bridge has begun and is expected to last until July 2026. During this time, the well-known bridge will be extensively rebuilt and at the same time tram line 18 will be extended. A new connection is to be created between the 2nd and 3rd districts, which could significantly improve mobility in the city.

The construction site restricts traffic in both directions. Only one lane is available in the direction of the 2nd district, while two lanes remain in the direction of the 3rd district. Unfortunately, these changed traffic conditions also lead to frequent traffic jams, especially in these areasSchlachthausgasse, Erdbergstrasse and Stadionallee. Also on the East motorway (A4) Lane narrowings occur during the day and total closures are even possible at night.

Construction work and traffic adjustments

The stadium bridge, which is 82 meters long and 26 meters wide, will be modernized and receive new safety measures. Among other things, the main and cross beams will be reinforced, and a new drainage system will ensure that rainwater is drained away more effectively. Despite the work, the bridge remains open to vehicle traffic, providing some relief for commuters.

Cyclists and pedestrians also have to adapt to changes: During construction work, the cycle path will be temporarily redirected to the staircase path and the accompanying path. Some sections of the Danube Canal cycle path are routed via Erdbergstrasse and Gaswerksteg.

Local public transport remains restricted

There will also be restrictions for bus route 80A. This will be redirected in sections until summer 2026, a circumstance that has been in force since November 2025. However, bus line 80A towards Praterstern is back on its usual route. Bus line 77A, however, remains rerouted via the A23 and uses the St. Marx exit to Erdbergstrasse.

While the city of Vienna is trying to make the diversions and adjustments in public transport as painless as possible, the great desire for alternative suggestions from the football club concerned remained unfulfilled. All suggestions from those responsible were rejected.

However, good news comes in the form of planned attractiveness of the connecting railway in Vienna. This project aims to create the infrastructural conditions for a reliable west-east connection, which could significantly reduce travel times and encourage more people to switch to public transport.

It remains to be seen whether the current restrictions will have a positive long-term impact on Vienna's transport infrastructure. What is certain is that the efforts of the City of Vienna and the companies involved could pay off in the coming years.
