The charges are serious: The 16-year-old is said to have, among other things, translated bomb-making instructions and established a connection to an IS member. The young defendant was already a supporter of IS ideology at the age of 14 and became radicalized through relevant propaganda on the Internet. The Berlin Court of Appeal ultimately found the defendant guilty and imposed a youth sentence of one year and six months, although the execution was also suspended on probation.
The aftermath and the current status
Although the verdict has been made, it is not yet legally binding. The relative's confirmed contacts with a Syrian IS member and the translations of critical materials raise questions about security in the entire area. This case is not only an example of the risk of radicalization among young people, but also shows how closely the security situation in Vienna is linked to the activities of suspected IS supporters.
The authorities are now faced with the challenge of identifying such developments at an early stage and intervening if necessary.
