Koralmbahn Revolution: Leoben is losing its importance as a transport hub!

The Koralmbahn will begin operations on December 14, 2025, opening a new chapter in the Austrian transport infrastructure. This project is one of the most important construction projects in Europe and will also bring about drastic changes for the Leoben region. As meinkreis.at reports, Leoben will be decoupled from the traditional Vienna-Graz-Klagenfurt-Villach connection by the new southern route.

This brings with it some changes for travelers from Leoben. In the future, they will have to commute to Bruck an der Mur in order to connect to long-distance traffic, as the north-south connections are now routed via the Koralm Tunnel. The previous long-distance trains that ran via Leoben will instead use the new Koralmbahn route. Although the Vienna-Bruck-Leoben-Klagenfurt connection remains, the travel time will be extended. Direct connections to Carinthia or Italy are no longer necessary, and changes in Graz or Bruck an der Mur will be necessary in the future.

New offers and improvements

In order to cushion the effects of the traffic change, ÖBB is announcing a new long-distance transport offer: the Interregio. The new connections Graz – Bruck – Leoben – Klagenfurt, Graz – Leoben – Linz and Graz – Leoben – Innsbruck will be set up with new, barrier-free vehicles that offer WiFi and space for bicycles. Connections to Vienna will become less frequent but will remain regular and relatively quick.

In this context, the Tauern Corridor continues to be of central importance for connections to Salzburg, Munich and Germany. The old routes for trips to Upper Styria, the Ennstal and Carinthia are expected to be retained.

Timetable and information

The presentation of the new timetable is just around the corner. The new connections will be presented on September 16th in Vienna, while regional details will be presented on October 6th in Graz. This will be crucial for many commuters and travelers in and around Leoben in order to better adapt to the coming changes.

The Koralmbahn is a prime example of the modernization of the transport system in Austria. Although for some travelers the direct connections they are used to may mean they have to rely on transfers in the future, the long-term vision will certainly improve connectivity and mobility in the region. There is great anticipation about the new trains and better accessibility to other cities.

Meanwhile, when planning trips to other regions, such as the Caribbean, you can take advantage of the benefits that new offers and opportunities offer. Providers like Kayak offer packages that make planning easier and are tailored to individual interests. Whatever your travel plans, there is sure to be a suitable solution.

In a world in which mobility is becoming increasingly important, it remains to be seen how the new connections and offers will prove themselves. In any case, the coming months for the Leoben region will be characterized by exciting changes in the transport infrastructure.
