There are currently only three dog zones in Josefstadt, which welcome over 500 dogs in the area. According to current figures, exactly 525 dogs lived in this district last year. This corresponds to 21.43 dogs per 1,000 inhabitants. If you take a closer look at the dog areas, they are located in Schönbornpark, Hernalser Belt and Hamerlingpark. Despite this relatively small number, there are efforts to improve the situation for four-legged friends. The SPÖ Josefstadt submitted two motions at the district council meeting to achieve exactly that.
Improvements to the dog areas
One of the applications deals with the examination of a potential expansion or better use of the dog zone in Hamerlingpark. It is important that the remaining area of the park should not be reduced. The second proposal focuses on the cleanliness of the dog areas by requiring shorter cleaning intervals. Both motions received cross-party support and were passed. This shows that there is something going on in the district and that the representatives are taking the wishes of dog owners seriously.
Although the Vienna City Gardens (MA 42) are currently unable to comment on redesign plans for Hamerlingpark and there is currently no official application for expansion, there remains hope that these measures will be implemented quickly. The Vienna Cleanliness Act also applies in dog areas, which means that dog owners must clean up their dogs' feces immediately.
