Josefstadt: Dog owners demand more space for their four-legged friends!
There are currently only three dog zones in Josefstadt, which welcome over 500 dogs in the area. According to current figures, exactly 525 dogs lived in this district last year. This corresponds to 21.43 dogs per 1,000 inhabitants. If you take a closer look at the dog areas, they are located in Schönbornpark, Hernalser Belt and Hamerlingpark. Despite this relatively small number, there are efforts to improve the situation for four-legged friends. The SPÖ Josefstadt submitted two motions at the district council meeting to achieve exactly that.
Improvements to the dog areas
One of the applications deals with the examination of a potential expansion or better use of the dog zone in Hamerlingpark. It is important that the remaining area of the park should not be reduced. The second proposal focuses on the cleanliness of the dog areas by requiring shorter cleaning intervals. Both motions received cross-party support and were passed. This shows that there is something going on in the district and that the representatives are taking the wishes of dog owners seriously.
Although the Vienna City Gardens (MA 42) are currently unable to comment on redesign plans for Hamerlingpark and there is currently no official application for expansion, there remains hope that these measures will be implemented quickly. The Vienna Cleanliness Act also applies in dog areas, which means that dog owners must clean up their dogs' feces immediately.
Space available for dogs in Vienna
A city-wide comparison shows how important the dog zones are for Vienna. A total of 57,901 dogs live in the city, spread over an area of 1,140,234 m² in dog areas and dog runs. This means that each dog has an exercise area of around 3,130 m². A look at the specific figures for Josefstadt shows that there is an area of 2,114.34 m² for 512 dogs. This represents 0.19% of the district area and therefore an exercise area of 4.1 m² per dog.
| municipal district | Number of dogs | Area (m²) | Share of district area | Exercise area per dog (m²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Josefstadt | 512 | 2,114.34 | 0.19% | 4.1 |
The opinions of dog owners
Opinions among dog owners are divided: some are satisfied with the existing situation, while others see a clear need for improvement. A simple visitor to the Hernalser Belt clearly stated that he would like more space and greenery in the dog areas. However, it remains unclear whether dog owners' concerns will actually be addressed this summer.
Overall, the current situation highlights the challenges that many urban dog owners face. It remains to be hoped that the measures will be implemented soon to meet the needs of the dogs and their owners.
