Vienna rolls safely: Police launch campaign against e-scooter accidents!
E-scooters have now become an integral part of Vienna's cityscape - they are practical, fast and modern. But the increase in usage also has its downsides. According to the latest reports from MyDistrict In 2024, there were two deaths and around 400 injuries due to e-scooter accidents in Vienna. Figures like these make it clear that there is a need for action here.
On June 5, 2025, the Vienna police launched the “Vienna rolls safely” campaign. The focus is on promoting safety, consideration and responsible use of e-scooters. The information campaign was launched in front of the Burgtheater and is intended to inform the people of Vienna about the applicable rules and laws.
Pillars of the campaign
What is the concept behind this campaign? It is based on three essential pillars. First of all, it's about prevention work like that courier reported. The aim is to highlight common violations, such as riding on sidewalks, using a scooter by several people at the same time, driving against one-way streets or ignoring traffic lights. These behaviors have led to numerous accidents in the past.
The second pillar includes repressive measures. E-scooter drivers are treated like car drivers, especially if they are impaired by alcohol or drugs. Fines can range from 800 to 5,900 euros, and there is the possibility of having your driving ability checked and your driving license revoked. An example illustrates the urgency: During a key campaign in March, four impaired e-scooter drivers were taken out of service, which led to over 300 reports.
The third pillar is to raise awareness among parents and other road users. For this purpose, information folders are distributed that guide the safe use of e-scooters. The aim is to guarantee the safety of all road users on the road.
Increase in accidents
But the number of e-scooter accidents is not only increasing in Vienna, the numbers are also alarming in Germany. How destatis reported, the number of e-scooter accidents with personal injuries rose by 14.1% to 9,425 accidents in 2023 compared to 2022. The most common causes of accidents are incorrect road use and the influence of alcohol. In addition, over 80% of those involved in the accident were under 45 years old, which particularly affects the young target group of e-scooter users.
It is therefore important for Vienna to promote preventive measures and education in order to reduce the number of accidents. The current campaign “Vienna rolls safely” could make an important contribution to this. All interested citizens are invited to find out about the new information materials, which contain QR codes for short explanatory videos on the safe use of e-scooters. The police want to raise awareness among Viennese people about the issue of safety and promote responsible behavior on the roads.
