Vienna thrilled: decline in extraordinary students causes cheers!

Vienna is currently presenting itself with positive news from the education sector: In October 2025, the number of extraordinary students in the city fell by 614 people, which corresponds to a decline of 3.3 percent. This brings the total number of extraordinary students to 18,284. Education City Councilor Bettina Emmerling (Neos) attributes this decline to the successful early language support measures. This is a clear sign of the integration and language skills of the children we teach in our schools. These developments are not only positive for the schools, but also show that the cooperation between the city, federal government and state is working.

The decline is particularly significant at middle schools: here a decline of 18.7 percent was recorded, while polytechnic schools even experienced a decline of 31.5 percent. The Education Directorate sees the decline as a positive trend and emphasizes the effect of targeted support measures. In times when there is increasing emphasis on well-structured language, these results are a step in the right direction. Emmerling is convinced that significant progress has been made in the areas of integration and language education, so that children can be better prepared for the demands of everyday school life.

The progress made can be found not least in the management structure of the schools and their cooperation with various educational providers. Improved collaboration makes it possible to make language training more effective. The combination of intensive training and practical applications seems to benefit the students.
