Tram World Cup 2025 in Vienna: Eight exciting disciplines on the rails!
There will be a very special event in Vienna on September 13, 2023: The first disciplines of the Tram World Championship were recently presented. Teams from 25 cities worldwide, including major cities such as Brussels, Casablanca, Hong Kong, San Diego, Melbourne and Rio de Janeiro, will take part in this unique competition. A team from Wiener Linien will also be there and has prepared intensively for the challenges that await them at the Tram World Cup, as MeinBezirk reports.
The event is characterized by a total of eight exciting disciplines that require both skill and precision from the participants. These include, among others:
The test run
Media representatives had the opportunity to try out three of these disciplines themselves and test their skills. My colleagues from MeinBezirk, for example, achieved 450 points in the target braking, but only managed 50 points in the tram curling and ended up sixth out of ten in the overall ranking. A successful foretaste of the challenges that await the teams at the World Cup!
Looking into the future
But it's not just the Tram World Cup that's just around the corner. In 2025, Vienna will once again come into focus when the international tram world championship is held here. This was recently announced by Mayor Michael Ludwig as part of the preparations for the European Tram Championships in Frankfurt am Main, which will take place on September 14, 2024. The Wiener Linien want to defend their title from 2023, as Kurier reports.
Vienna already hosted the European Tram Championships in 2015, which have since taken place annually in various European cities. At the World Cup, teams can also prepare for various competitions that test precision and skill, including emergency braking and the spectacular Bim Bowling, where trams roll large balls onto set up pins.
With the commitment of numerous nations from South America, Southeast Asia and Africa, this World Cup will bring an international flair to Vienna that will delight tram fans. The vehicles for the World Cup will be provided by Wiener Linien and invitations to participate will be sent out in January 2025. Further information about the event will be announced in spring 2025, according to Wiener Linien on its website Wiener Linien.
