Hietzing relies on local parking: finally combat traffic chaos!

The residents of Hietzing can look forward to: From December onwards, local parking will be introduced on the streets Wattmanngasse, Trauttmansdorffgasse, Wolltergasse, Tirolergasse and Gloriettegasse. This was decided by a cross-party committee after an investigation by MA 45 revealed a high parking space pressure of over 90 percent in the region. Things get particularly tight near Schönbrunn and the Tiergarten, which are particularly popular attractions. This new system will only apply on weekdays, while on weekends the parking situation will remain tense due to tourism. Vehicles with a valid parking sticker for Hietzing are then allowed to use the newly reserved areas to make parking easier for residents. Today reports that district leader Johanna Zinkl (ÖVP) and other district representatives judge the project positively.

Why is local parking so important right now? An analysis by the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) shows that car traffic has decreased in a total of 13 districts of Vienna. This decline is taking place in different parts of the city, with the Danube City recording the largest decline. With a car share of only 363 cars per 1,000 people, the number of cars in Vienna has decreased noticeably since 2005, making Vienna one of the country's leading cities in this regard. At this point it should be mentioned that Margareten has the lowest car share in all of Austria. ORF reports that similar trends can also be observed in other parts of the city, although the exact numbers were not specified.

Parking space management in Vienna

The introduction of parking space management in Vienna dates back to 2022 and will continue to be pushed forward at the city level. A significant proportion of traffic in urban areas is caused by searching for parking, which can vary between 8 and 74 percent. In addition, the average search time for parking spaces is between 3.5 and 14 minutes. The new regulation in Hietzing is a step towards reducing parking pressure and increasing the quality of life for residents. An innovative project is also being considered in Vienna's 7th district that aims to do without street parking by 2040, which shows that Vienna is actively working on its mobility transition. Wiener Stadtwerke highlights that 10% of parking spaces in Vienna are to be electrified by 2030 - with currently 500 active charging points installed in collaboration with Wien Energie.

The decision about local parking in Hietzing is not just a local project, but part of a broader plan to improve urban mobility in Vienna. The implementation of these measures could not only reduce parking traffic, but also contribute to increasing the quality of life and protecting the environment and residents in the long term.
