Cannabis discovery in Hietzing: drug laboratory and arrests in Vienna!

In Vienna-Hietzing there was a surprising discovery due to water damage - the police discovered a significant amount of cannabis in an apartment. According to [vienna.at](https://www.vienna.at/cannabis-fund-nach-wasser Schaden-in-wohnung-in-wien-hietzing/9456533), the apartment was entered by the Lainzer Straße police station, where officers seized not only 120 cannabis plants, but also 5,824.2 grams of packaged cannabis herb. In addition, the investigations by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South Branch, went into another apartment in Vienna-Meidling, which was targeted by the police due to high electricity consumption.

In this apartment, the emergency services discovered an additional 64 cannabis plants and around 1 kilogram of additional cannabis herb. In total, the amount added up to an impressive 6,915.3 grams of cannabis herb and 168 cannabis plants. In addition, cash amounting to 3,140 euros was found. The investigation uncovered evidence of three suspects – a 25-year-old man and two brothers aged 29 and 31. The two older ones were arrested in an apartment in Vienna-Penzing and during their interrogation the 31-year-old confessed to having sold cannabis on a large scale and to growing it in various apartments, while the 29-year-old denied any guilt.

Drug laboratories in Vienna

But it wasn't just in Hietzing that there was recent excitement surrounding drugs. In another incident in Vienna-Simmering, two young men aged 20 and 22 were arrested. They tried to sell cannabis at the Zippererstrasse subway station. The police then investigated an apartment in Vienna-Landstrasse, which turned out to be a drug laboratory. According to die Presse, the police seized around 1.5 liters of liquid ecstasy (GHB) as well as large quantities of medicines and around 500 grams of cannabis herb. The three suspects, including a 24-year-old main suspect, were temporarily arrested after a short period of isolation from the residents of the house, but had to be released later due to a lack of confessions.

A worrying trend

The increase in such incidents is alarming. A look at the numbers shows that a total of 256 drug-related deaths were registered in Austria in 2023, most of them in Vienna, as shown by Statista. The drug-related death rate was 4.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. What is particularly striking is that younger people are increasingly turning to cannabis and the prevalence of use among men is far higher than that of women. Mentally stressed men consume more than four times as often as their less stressed peers.

The current situation highlights the urgent need for action in the area of drug control and prevention. It remains to be seen how the city and authorities respond to these challenges, as Vienna continues to rank in the lower midfield when it comes to dealing with illegal drugs.
