KAC loses with drama in Vorarlberg: extra time and penalty shootout decide!
Sport and excitement, that's what drives EC-KAC fans these days. But in their away game against the Pioneers in Vorarlberg, the long series of away wins came to an abrupt end. The game went up and down, with numerous chances and tricky situations, but in the end the KAC had to admit defeat in a thrilling game.
The game started anything but encouraging for the Red Jackets. The first dangerous opportunity came in the 6th minute, but David Madlener in the Pioneers' goal showed himself to be in top form early on and made the save. Particularly unfortunate: David Waschnig was unable to use the rebound efficiently. As a result, Nathan Bourke and Daniel Obersteiner tried, but their shots didn't find their way into the net either - a series of chances that simply didn't come to fruition.
The course of the game
Not much happened in the first third and the KAC was unable to score until the 20th minute despite numerous attempts. There was hope in the second period when Matt Fraser finally scored the first goal for EC-KAC in the 37th minute after Jan Muršak fed him a precise pass. But the joy was short-lived as the Pioneers showed their fighting spirit and equalized in the third period through Nathan Burke after a quick counterattack.
The game was now in the balance. Both teams gave nothing away, numerous opportunities arose, but neither Casey Dornbach nor the other KAC strikers were able to score the decisive goal. A painful moment was the missed goal for Matt Fraser on the power play in extra time, which was overturned after a review.
The exciting ending
In the penalty shootout decision, it was Casey Dornbach who scored for the KAC, while the other shooters – Muršak, Murray and Obersteiner – unfortunately failed. So the second point went to the Pioneers, who were able to celebrate the narrow but deserved victory.
The fans had hoped for more, but despite the defeat, the EC-KAC remains a powerful team. A look at the coming challenge will be crucial. What is it called? “After the game is before the next game!” A good hand and a little more luck could make the difference next time.
