Commemoration in Vienna: ORF dedicates itself to the November pogroms of 1938

Today in Vienna there is an important commemoration of the pogroms of November 9th to 10th, 1938. To this end, the ORF has launched a multimedia program that focuses on the memory of the victims of Nazi terror and the Jewish history of Vienna. From Tuesday there will be comprehensive reports on the channels ORF 2, ORF III, Ö1 and ORF ON. KURIER reports that The presenter Danielle Spera will present the two-part series “Jewish Vienna” on November 4th and 11th, 2025 at 8:15 p.m. on ORF III.

The program manager of ORF III, Peter Schöber, emphasizes the broadcaster's responsibility in the fight against anti-Semitism. The aim of the actions is to make historical connections visible and to promote a dialogue about the past, present and future. It is particularly important to actively address and address latent anti-Semitism, which is expressed in codes and innuendos. Instead of coming to terms with the past, we should encourage discussion of these issues.

Diverse program

The week of events offers a wide range of television content. On November 4th at 11:05 p.m. the documentary “criss-cross: one family – two worlds” by Peter Mahler will be shown, in which he sheds light on his own family history, characterized by a Jewish grandfather and an SS man. Further premieres include “Out of the Frame” with Karl Hohenlohe in the Jewish Museum Vienna at 10:40 p.m. and “History Today – Austria's Expelled Geniuses” on Saturday at 7:50 p.m.

The film “The Passport Forger – Underground Resistance” about the resistance fighter Cioma Schönhaus will also be broadcast on November 7th at 10:35 p.m. “The Guardian of Memory – Daliah Hindler” follows on November 9th at 12.30 p.m., which focuses on memorial and remembrance work in Vienna. Robert Gokl's productions that deal with anti-Semitism also complement the program, for example in “People & Powers” and “Old Hate, New Madness”. Fictional classics such as “Martha Liebermann – A Stolen Life” and “Schindler’s List” round off the diverse offering.

Conversations and streaming

Ö1 pays particular attention to the work of remembrance without contemporary witnesses, which will be discussed in a conversation on Friday. The programs are also available to stream on ORF ON, and historical recordings can be found in the video archive. In addition, ORF.at provides information about upcoming commemorative events and thus offers a comprehensive platform for discussing this important topic.

Dealing with anti-Semitism is particularly important today. The bpb dossier shows that there is not only an increase in latent prejudices, but also new forms of anti-Semitism, which often appear as anti-Zionism. These developments make the commemorative events all the more relevant and urge discussion about the various facets of anti-Semitism. bpb explained that the modern image of anti-Semitism has changed and that effective steps against these attitudes are necessary.

Through this broad program and the various formats, the ORF hopes to have a good hand at not only informing viewers, but also sensitizing them and promoting an important dialogue. Coming to terms with the past and the wrong paths of history are essential in order to shape a better common future.
