Galileigasse shines: Award for new meeting center in Vienna!

An exciting event for the city of Vienna: On September 18, 2025, the innovative project “Tik Tak Galilei” was recognized as part of the VCÖ Mobility Prize. The award shows how important creative concepts are for urban mobility and quality of life. The patron of the award was city councilor Ulli Sima, who, together with other representatives from VCÖ and ÖBB, honored the projects that were planned for a sustainable city.

The Tactical Urbanism project “Tik Tak Galilei” was implemented in Alsergrund in June 2024 and aimed to transform Galileigasse into a safe and welcoming environment. With the support of 23 students from the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning at TU Wien, the street was transformed into a temporary pedestrian zone. Before the redesign, Galileigasse was mainly used as a thoroughfare and parking lot, which left residents with little freedom of movement. Now the area shines with greenery, flowers and raised beds and has developed into a popular meeting place.

Award for exemplary projects

A total of 73 projects were submitted to the VCÖ Mobility Prize, all of which pursued a diverse approach to improving urban mobility and quality of life. Other award-winning projects include the “Car Bet”, an interesting concept from Wiener Linien, in which 37 households went without their own car for three months and instead relied on public transport, bicycles and sharing offers. Through this initiative, participants were able to sustainably change their mobility behavior; A quarter of them even decided to sell the car entirely.

The redesign of Galileigasse is seen as an example of successful, integrative urban redevelopment and is a step towards a more environmentally friendly and child-friendly city. Traffic in the morning hours has improved significantly, giving the children at the nearby elementary school and kindergarten more freedom of movement. With the focus on the quality of urban spaces, this is exactly what modern urban concepts strive for - as difu.de makes clear: Integrated planning of spatial structures and traffic should reduce environmental pollution and promote equal opportunities.

A step into the future

The successes of the award-winning projects illustrate the need to rethink mobility and urban planning. Through innovative concepts such as those used in Tik Tak Galilei and the other award-winning projects, the city can not only be made more livable, but also more sustainable. Campaigns like the “Car Bet” show that it is entirely possible to question personal mobility behavior and act sustainably - and that makes Vienna a role model for many other cities.

In conclusion, it should be noted that projects like “Tik Tak Galilei” and the “Auto-Wette” not only enrich the lifestyle of the Viennese, but also set an example for sustainable and communal coexistence in the urban environment. We can look forward to seeing how these developments will shape the future of our city.
