Dance connects: Inclusive event for seniors at Haus Mira Vienna”

In Vienna, on Thursday, October 16th, the Floridsdorfer Haus Mira will be the venue for an exciting inclusive dance event under the motto “Dance connects”. Organized by Caritas Vienna, the event is aimed at seniors of all backgrounds and with a wide range of dance experiences. This campaign takes place as part of Senior Citizens' Month, an important date to raise awareness of the needs and potential of older people and to promote cooperation.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., participants can look forward to a series of workshops led by experienced dance educators from the “Dance the Tolerance” project. No previous knowledge is required, which significantly lowers the inhibition threshold for anyone interested. Accessible workshops are specifically designed to meet the needs of people with physical limitations, so everyone has the opportunity to participate and experience the joy of dance. After the workshops there is time for free dancing, laughing and celebrating with music that comes from different cultures.

Dancing together and celebrating diversity

Dancing creates spaces for encounters that go far beyond cultural and linguistic boundaries. As Caritas Vienna writes on its website, the “Dance the Tolerance” project enables new contacts and shared experiences. People who often live past each other find points of contact through dancing and experience a changed perception of their surroundings and fellow human beings. Non-alcoholic drinks and healthy snacks will also be available, and participants are invited to submit their own music preferences.

The event places particular emphasis on the health of older refugees and combating loneliness. In times when social isolation is a serious problem, promoting community and exchange is more important than ever. The event is free, but registration by email to anja.hochrathner@caritas-wien.at is requested to make planning easier.

Broader perspectives on inclusion in dance sports

Inclusion in dance is also a priority in other regions and in various initiatives. A similar event took place on October 2nd in Munich, where the joint dance day between Special Olympics Germany and the German Dance Sports Association offered an opportunity to promote inclusion in sport. Schools and special needs schools were invited there, and here too the participation fee was zero - a sign that dance should really be accessible to everyone. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has established inclusion as essential, and many dance sports clubs actively implement this philosophy to give people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in dance sports.

In this spirit, the Floridsdorfer Haus Mira invites all interested seniors to become part of a special experience. It is a wonderful opportunity not only to dance, but also to make new friends and experience the feeling of community. Dance along!
