Vienna train journeys shine: 73% of satisfied travelers report improvements!

Train travel in Vienna is becoming increasingly popular. According to that Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) The latest survey results show that 24 percent of Viennese commuters travel by train more often than in the previous year. In a survey of 9,360 travelers as part of the 2025 rail test, 49 percent said they had already taken a holiday trip by train during the day. The results are largely positive, particularly in terms of punctuality and the quality of the wagons.

The survey also shows that 69 percent of participants take the train equally often, while only 7 percent said they travel less often. However, not all aspects of rail travel are consistently viewed positively. A third of travelers are dissatisfied with direct connections to other European cities. These connections in particular still seem to need improvement.

Improvements in quality

When it comes to the quality of rail travel, passengers are pleased about some improvements. 73 percent of those surveyed rated the quality of the wagons as better, and 80 percent rated the presence of the train crew positively. In the last twelve months, an improvement in the coordination between trains and buses was noted, which 62 percent of travelers noted as positive.

However, there are still challenges, such as the network quality for mobile internet on the train. 43 percent would like better coverage here. Accessibility at Vienna train stations is also perceived as improved by 82 percent of those surveyed, a key argument for an attractive infrastructure.

Satisfaction with the service

When it comes to customer satisfaction, the results of the 2024 rail test show that a total of 89 percent of travelers are satisfied with their journeys. The aspects that were particularly praised by passengers included the cleanliness of the train and the comprehensibility of the announcements. The satisfaction ratings in these areas are an encouraging 85 percent and 81 percent respectively.

But the VCÖ remains skeptical about the implementation and coordination of connection connections. This is a major problem for many passengers. 40 percent of those surveyed said they miss connections several times a year. Here sees VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger significant catching up to do.

Future outlook

The trend shows that traveling by train is becoming increasingly popular. 17 percent of respondents plan to travel by train in the next twelve months. The VCÖ emphasizes that this increase is not only due to the good ecological balance of rail travel, but also due to the constant striving for improvement across the entire industry.

Despite the progress, it remains important to continue to take passengers' concerns seriously and to work on making rail travel more attractive. A look into the future shows that although the challenges are great, it is the responsibility of everyone involved to find and implement solutions.
