The anticipation of a very special event in Vienna is palpable. The 200th birthday of Johann Strauss' son will be celebrated on October 25, 2025. The festivities under the motto"King of Waltz. Queen of Music"stand, promise a brilliant homage to one of the city's biggest music stars, who left an unforgettable mark with his legendary compositions such as "Die Fledermaus" and the "Donauwalzer".
The anniversary year will be marked by numerous events that will take place in all 23 districts of Vienna and even take place in unusual places such as the Central Cemetery. Both traditional and innovative projects will be presented. The highlight of the celebrations will of course be on the actual birthday, when the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra will present a top-class musical fireworks display.
A day full of music
The holiday begins on October 25th at 11 a.m. with a ceremony in the town hall. Mayor Michael Ludwig and City Councilor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler will open the celebrations, accompanied by artists such as Alma Deutscher and Martin Grubinger. Throughout the day there are numerous concerts on the program that honor Strauss' unique music.
The anniversary will be celebrated in the Musikverein with two major concerts: At 3:30 p.m., the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Tugan Sokhiev will play a “Best of Strauss” program from 1925. The piece “Schani 200” by Georg Breinschmid will also be premiered. In the evening, at 7:30 p.m., the Vienna Symphony Orchestra's birthday concert will be held with Manfred Honeck as conductor and soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter, which will feature premieres by John Williams and Max Richter.
Diverse offers and attractions
It's not just the big concerts that are a highlight. An extensive program offers further attractions, including the new production of the operetta “One Night in Venice” in the Volksoper and the ballet premiere “Strauss 2225: Dances for the Future” in the NEST – Neue Staatsoper. The escape room event “Shadows of Doubt – in the Mind of the Genius” in the MuseumsQuartier also offers creative puzzle fun.
Tickets are required for all events, although there are remaining spaces available for the concerts. Admission to the ceremony in the town hall is also free, but registration is required.
