U6 extension to Stammersdorf: urban planning on hold!

The Vienna subway has no reason to rush at the moment: the U6 remains the last stop at Jonas-Platz in Floridsdorf for the time being. Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima has made it clear that extending the line to Stammersdorf or beyond is currently not an issue. With the ongoing work on the U2/U5 intersection, which is expected to last until the 1930s, the city is currently setting other traffic priorities, such as DFZ21 reports.

Sima still sees the future of the subway in Vienna in a positive light, at least when it comes to the Rothneusiedl urban development area. This is considered a potential target for the last major subway extension in Vienna. The decision to pursue these plans is recorded in the urban development plan “Wien Plan” until 2035. However, it is unclear what exactly will happen in 2024. A timely route of the U6 to the city limits, as often requested, is only realistic after 2040.

Projects on the horizon

In Vienna, in addition to the subway projects, there is also movement elsewhere. The City of Pawtucket received a Municipal Resilience Program Action Grant in 2024 through the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank. The aim of this program is to sustainably combat frequent flooding caused by rainwater. Pawtucket has secured comprehensive funding to begin planning for the Daggett Avenue Green Infrastructure Corridor PawtucketRI reports.

Nature-based solutions are used there, which, among other things, are intended to improve existing green spaces, increase tree cover and optimize the storage and treatment of rainwater runoff. The city's goal is to improve the quality of life and ability to adapt to climate changes for residents. A planned neighborhood meeting on April 29, 2025 will provide important information on the project status. Residents are welcome to provide their opinions and suggestions.
