Cancer prevention for women: health ambassadors active in Favoriten!

On June 26, 2025, an information evening will take place in the festival hall of the Favoriten district council, which will be entirely dedicated to the topic of cancer prevention for women. This event, which starts at 6 p.m., is part of the “City People: Health Ambassadors – Cancer Prevention for Women” project. The aim is to increase the use of mammograms among women aged 45 to 74 in Austria, as currently only around 40% of these women take advantage of the opportunity to be examined. Vienna district newspaper reports that at this event the district leader Marcus Franz will also emphasize the importance of prevention and invite interested women to find out about the various offers.

The situation is particularly challenging because women with a migrant background are often not sufficiently informed about cancer prevention options. Language barriers and inadequate information are common hurdles that need to be overcome. The “City People” project aims to raise awareness of women-specific cancers, particularly breast cancer. The project is designed to sensitize women from different communities and encourage them to take part in preventative health check-ups. The Portal City People Vienna highlights that important information will be available in multiple languages through support and training of “health ambassadors”.

Lack of information as a hurdle

An analysis of the Federal Ministry for Health shows that many women in the 50 to 69 age group are invited for mammography every two years. This regulation will be expanded for women up to 75 years of age from July 1, 2024, so that they can arrange an examination appointment themselves. This could be an important step to increase take-up of the offers.

But the challenges remain. Women with a migrant background are often not sufficiently informed about their health care. The discussions in the project revealed that social or financial living conditions often mean that these women have less access to health care. It is therefore all the more important that the project offers the right contact points and assistance in breaking down barriers.

Early cancer detection and its importance

The ability to detect cancer early, particularly through mammography, is crucial for the health of women of the appropriate age. Early detection of breast cancer can be crucial to the success of treatment. In addition to mammography, extensive information is also offered, such as decision support for the initial diagnosis.

Anyone who would like to find out more about cancer prevention and the various initiatives in Vienna will have the opportunity to get to know the health ambassadors on June 26th. Admission is free and registration is not required, so all interested women are cordially invited to find out more about the offers and possibilities.
