Chewing gum machine targeted: man arrested!
In the early morning hour of June 19, 2025, remarkable incidents occurred in the 10th district of Vienna-Favoriten. A 33-year-old Slovak man was seen trying to break open a gumball machine with a screwdriver. The alleged perpetrator acted on the street around 4:30 a.m., which attracted the attention of a cautious witness. He didn't hesitate for long and immediately informed the police. As 5min.at reports, the emergency services were able to arrest the manly suspect in the act.
The tool he was carrying was seized as an instrument of the crime and the suspect was subsequently taken into custody by police officers. During the later interrogation, however, the man did not confess, which did not make the investigation any easier. Given the seriousness of the attempted theft, the Vienna public prosecutor's office decided to commit him to a prison, as Heute has noted.
The backgrounds
The incident sheds light on the problem of minor crimes in urban areas. The police crime statistics (PKS), which document criminal activity in Austria, show that there can also be an increase in petty crimes such as theft of chewing gum machines. These cases have been registered electronically since 2001 and are used by the police not only to compile statistics, but also as a basis for strategic measures to combat crime. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the PKS is an important instrument in the preventive and repressive fight against crime, even if the dark field of crimes is not covered. This information is based on the Federal Criminal Police Office and shows the relevance of advertisement statistics for public security measures.
Incidents like this one at the gumball machine can indeed be seen as indicators of social problems. The reporting of such acts also depends heavily on the reporting behavior of the population. While some are desperately looking for small ways to make a quick buck, others struggle to keep their homes safe and clean.
It remains to be seen what further information the investigation into the gumball machine case will reveal and to what extent this crime will be reflected in the city's larger crime statistics. One thing is certain: chewing gum remains popular - and some even seem to want to profit from it illegally.
