Brutal break-in in Vienna: girl locked in the bathroom!

A brutal break-in shocked Vienna on Wednesday. Two perpetrators armed with knives broke into a single-family home in the Mauer district (Vienna-Liesing) around 10:50 a.m. and apparently assumed that no one was at home. However, surprisingly, there was a girl in the house who hid in the bathroom, locked the door and called her father. He reacted immediately and made an emergency call. Thanks to the quick action of the police, who were on site within a few minutes and immediately launched a large-scale manhunt, one of the suspects was arrested. The use of helicopters and drones to search for additional perpetrators shows how serious the situation was. The exact number of perpetrators is currently unclear, causing additional concern.

Such an incident raises questions, especially in the context of current burglary statistics. According to home-insider.de, there has been an increase in the number of break-ins in Germany, which continues to raise concerns about the security in our own homes. In 2023, over 77,000 residential burglaries were registered nationwide, which means an increase of around 18 percent compared to the previous year. On average, a burglary occurs every 213 seconds in Germany.

Burglaries in Vienna

Although the same numbers are not to be expected in Vienna, there is still an increasing trend in burglaries here too. In connection with the current series of burglaries in Liesing, some young people were arrested who are suspected of being involved in several burglaries. According to meinkreis.at, the arrest of these people could contribute to improving security in the affected districts. It is emphasized that prevention measures are of great importance in order to make burglary attempts more difficult.

Burglars often use preferred attack points such as balcony and patio doors, which is why effective mechanical security measures are crucial. The more protection you offer, the less opportunistic possible perpetrators will be. The police have already offered free security advice to show citizens how they can better protect themselves.

The current situation makes it clear that it is important to be vigilant in Vienna too. Despite plans to improve security and police efforts, we as a society are asked to support each other and be alert to suspicious activity. This is the only way to regain the feeling of security in everyday life.
