Eckermann in the shadow of Goethe: A masterpiece by Martin Walser!

In Vienna there is once again cause for joy for theater lovers. OnJune 10, 2025the Scala Theater celebrates the rediscovery of Martin Walser's play "In Goethe's hand". This production takes an exciting look at the living environment of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his loyal secretary, Eckermann. The plot focuses on Eckermann's tireless efforts to stand in the shadow of the master poet and at the same time pursue his own goals. Theater Compass reports that Eckermann is not only fighting for recognition in Weimar, but also for his own happiness with his fiancée Hannchen.

The production was directed by Bruno Max and gives the complex relationship between Goethe and Eckermann a new dimension. The stage, designed by Robert Notsch, and the costumes, designed by Anna Pollak, create a lively atmosphere that immerses the audience in the world of the 19th century. Gerda Fischer's masks and Andrea Wezdenka's lighting design complete the visual experience. Among the talented actors are Katharina Krause and Hans-Jürgen Bertram as Goethe, who masterfully capture the dynamic between the two characters.

The chaotic world around Goethe

Eckermann, who worked as Goethe's secretary for over a decade, neglected not only his own literary career, but also the personal relationships that were close to his heart. Things are chaotic in Goethe's household - from the unpredictable daughter-in-law Ottilie to the alcoholic servant Stadelmann, a reflection of life in that time. These minor characters contribute to the suspenseful atmosphere of the play.

The plot begins with the death of Goethe and immerses the audience in retrospective memories that address the challenges of aging and the expectations of the next generation. Walser not only created the character of Eckermann as an admirer of Goethe, but also recognized the inner conflicts that shape the writer as he acts in the shadow of his master. Eckhard Ullrich emphasizes that Eckermann is seen as a symbol for the “mediocre”, those who often act in secret but still have big dreams.

A masterpiece with history

Martins Walser's work, which was first published in 1982, not only takes a critical look at the literary scene of the 19th century, but also reflects Walser's own life story and literary development. Walser's 90th birthday was celebrated on March 22, 2017, a date that coincided with Goethe's 285th death anniversary - a beautiful coincidence that underlines the bond between the two artists. Goethe.de describes how Walser is able to present Goethe's character in his play as confident while showing the insecurities that accompany Eckermann.

The remaining days of the play will take place until June 27, 2025, on Tuesdays to Saturdays, at 7:45 p.m. The Scala Theater will obviously be a place for the revival of literary dreams and an honest examination of one's own identity in the art world. An exciting opportunity for everyone who wants to experience the complex facets of Walser's work and the relationship to Goethe up close.
