New part of Pier 22: sports, cafés and enjoyment on the Danube!
On June 16, 2025, a new chapter for Vienna's leisure activities opened with the opening of the second part of Pier 22 on the banks of the New Danube. After the first phase, which opened a year ago, the Viennese can now look forward to a wide range of offerings in a modern leisure paradise. As the The press reports, the new section includes a large, covered sports field, currently made of gravel, as well as a fitness area with adjustable weight machines. The new sports areas and facilities are intended not only to promote health and fitness, but also to create a meeting place.
City councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) was satisfied with the behavior of the Viennese and emphasized the important role of the project for the local community. These openings follow a construction delay of seven to eight weeks caused by flooding last year. As part of the overall concept for the public space, consumption-free zones, comfortable lying areas and placed sports facilities are planned. A culinary experience by the water
A highlight of the new Pier 22 are the two newly opened cafés, “Inka an der Donau” with Peruvian delicacies and another café by Michael Ruess that offers healthy snacks. Both venues have been kept low to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The “Café Pier 22” will be open all year round and offers guests a wonderful view of the New Danube.
In addition, a roof for the sports field is in the test phase and the sports surface will be installed in one to two months. The new showers and toilet facilities make your stay at Pier 22 even more pleasant, while the lockers for valuables add another layer of security. Future developments at Pier 22
The City of Vienna's plan includes further developments in the coming period. The third phase of Pier 22 will continue with construction of an Italian island restaurant, scheduled to open in 2026. These new culinary offerings and the creation of water access throughout the area aim to improve access to the New Danube and further increase the quality of life in this part of Vienna.
The “Sunken City” project is therefore undergoing continuous redesign and development, with attention also being paid to elements such as flood protection, which play a central role in the region. The area will be redesigned in different phases, with each section offering unique benefits for residents and visitors. The part that has already been completed has already survived the record flood in September 2024.
Pier 22 creates a place that not only promotes recreational sports, but also serves as a more attractive point of contact for restaurants and recreation. The Viennese can look forward to the upcoming openings and activities in this wonderful leisure area.
