New Süßenbrunner Platz: Green heart for Donaustadt is being created!
Things are making progress in the Danube city: the unsealing measures have finally begun at Süßenbrunner Platz. The existing parking lot behind the Catholic church will be transformed into a green oasis that is scheduled to be completed by the end of November this year. District leader Ernst Nevrivy (SPÖ) emphasizes that the new square is not only a benefit for the residents, but should also act as a central meeting point for young and old. A real bright spot in urban renewal!
The work covers around 2,000 square meters, which will be unsealed to make room for green spaces. With a total of 24 newly planted trees and 1,300 square meters of herbaceous beds and lawns, the area will invite you to relax and linger. Nevrivy highlights that the space will also provide space for May trees and Christmas trees, which will strengthen the sense of community and significantly increase the quality of stay. It is already clear that the project represents added value for the population.
A place for the neighborhood
The redesigned area will not only offer more nature, but also create shady seating areas. Five pergolas with climbing plants will be installed to make spending time outdoors even more pleasant. Two new play equipment are planned for the little visitors, which invite them to run around and play. In addition, a water feature will be built in the middle of the square, reminiscent of the historic Rossschwemme and providing welcome refreshment.
Particularly noteworthy is the combination of drinking fountains and open water channels, which further enhance the stay in the new space. The old asphalt surface will be replaced by light-colored paving, which is not only visually appealing but also allows for better rainwater absorption. Barrier-free stops for public transport and new bicycle racks are part of the renovation, which focuses on sustainability and improved traffic management.
Sustainability and climate protection
With this redesign, Vienna is actively contributing to improving urban climate adaptation. The green spaces and trees will help regulate the temperature in the area and improve the urban climate. According to the project, 344 projects have been implemented in Vienna since the beginning of the legislative period, which also strive for sustainable urban development. These include, among other things, the planting of 3,316 trees and the creation of 2,745 seating options.
Overall, Süßenbrunner Platz will be an inviting and lively place that will be appreciated by residents and visitors alike. Completion is scheduled for the end of November 2025 - another example of how Vienna attaches great importance to quality of life and environmental awareness in the city on the Danube.
