Massive traffic problems after the autumn holidays: 18 km of traffic jams in Vienna!

A Monday morning after the autumn holidays was a tough one in the federal capital Vienna. Massive traffic jams have formed on many roads, driving many commuters crazy. A noticeable flashpoint was the southeast tangent (A23), where a rear-end collision in the direction of Kagran caused the longest traffic jam of around 18 kilometers. Despite the quick intervention of the police and fire brigade, which fortunately did not result in any injuries, drivers had to sit in a traffic jam for around an hour. The traffic jam extended to the southern motorway (A2) near Wiener Neudorf and even to the eastern motorway (A4) to Schwechat, as Krone reported.

In addition to the problems on the A23, the road signs in the rest of the country also said “traffic jam”. In Lower Austria, drivers on the Nord/Weinviertel motorway near Hochleithen had to put up with a sluggish afternoon, while in the Linz area on the Mühlkreis motorway (A7) and in Styria on the Pyhrn motorway (A9) between Leibnitz and Graz, vehicles barely moved forward. At 10:50 a.m., the ÖAMTC also reported traffic jams and traffic delays on several motorways and streets.

Traffic jam hotspots in Vienna

The traffic jam in the city was particularly severe. The A23 was a problem child, especially between Hirschstetten and the Kaisermühlen junction. But it didn't stop there; Vehicles were also at a standstill between Inzersdorf-Nord and Sagedergasse, as well as on the B64 between Arzberger Straße and Untergasse. Another accident report on the B226 between Floridsdorfer Brücke and Dresdner Straße further exacerbated the problems. Traffic was also slow between Sorbaitgasse and Gablenzgasse, making it difficult to get through.

The traffic situation is not just an isolated event today. According to Statistics Austria, there is a constant recording of road traffic accidents, which is important not only for safety reasons, but also for accident research and prevention. The aim of these statistics is to ensure continuous monitoring of accident events. The data is recorded electronically by police authorities and published quarterly, which ensures a reliable data basis.

Consecutive traffic problems

Anyone who wanted to travel today had to be prepared for further delays. On the A8 towards Salzburg there was a traffic jam between Achenmühle, while in Tyrol the A12 Inntal Autobahn between Jenbach and the Innsbruck-Amras junction made slow progress. The ÖAMTC also listed numerous disabilities in this phase. Security measures and traffic management are crucial after such incidents in order to ease the situation and gradually restore traffic flow.

Given this chaotic traffic situation, those in Vienna who have set up their desk or workstation in their home office can count themselves lucky. For commuters it is important to keep their nerve and not give up. Even though the streets may be full, one thing is certain: the city will always find a solution to get people to their destination safely. As the ÖAMTC advises, it is advisable to find out about alternative routes to avoid the traffic jam.
