Large track locks in Vienna: S-Bahn and subway affected in summer!

Kagran, Österreich - Vienna faces a number of restrictions in local public transport, while extensive maintenance and modernization work are carried out. The S-Bahn line S45 is currently interrupted because of this work. "From now until June 12, 2025, the section between Hernals and Handelskai is not passable," informs the ÖAMTC . A rail replacement traffic on buses has already been set up to drive the affected stops.

For passengers, this means that they have to search for alternatives at the Vienna Hernals, Vienna Gersthof and Vienna Heiligenstadt. On June 12th there will be other restrictions: the section between Heiligenstadt and Handelskai will be closed until June 23, 2025, with the same regulation for rail replacement.

modernization of the subway stations

At the same time, modernization work at subway stations is continuously carried out. Work is planned at the U1 station Kagran by the end of June 2025. Passengers have to expect a stop in the direction of travel in Oberlaa, but the additional transfer option on the old Danube remains. In addition, a modernization will take place on the U6 station Tscherttegasse from May 12, 2025, which is due to last until December. Here, too, it is recommended to switch to Meidling, since the stop is only operated in the direction of seven -shepherds.

extensive track work in the city

The track work goes hand in hand with a comprehensive modernization offensive in the Viennese lines. Among other things, this includes the exchange of 11 kilometers of tracks and the installation of 45 new switches, while for these measures, around 76 million euros are planned for these measures. Wiener Linien put special focus on the U4, whose tunnel infrastructure is over 120 years old. The work for this takes place between June 28th and September 1, 2025.

In the city center, there will also be changes in the track: Between July 1 and at the end of August, tracks on the Carinthian Ring, University Ring and Schubertring are exchanged. As a result, lines D, 1, 2 and 71 are diverted. Passengers can expect interval seals for other lines here.

The modernizations are not only limited to the subway and S-Bahn; Tram lines will also be affected. For example, more than 1,800 meters of tracks are renewed on Hütteldorfer Straße, as well as at other locations such as Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Schlachhausgasse.

announced innovations

In addition to the existing work, new tram lines are also being planned. From autumn 2025, line 12 will connect districts 8, 9, 20 and 2, while line 27 from Strebersdorf will lead to the U2 station Aspern Nord. Furthermore, line 18 between the 2nd and 3rd district is extended, and a new bus line 73b in Simmering is created. From Easter 2025, this will run from the central cemetery 3rd goal to the Kaisersdorf S-Bahn station.

With these measures, the Viennese lines want to not only modernize the infrastructure, but also ensure the reliability of public transport. According to the forecasts, two million passengers benefit from these improvements every day, while the Viennese lines achieve an impressive reliability of 99 percent with daily driving performance over 100,000 kilometers. The outlook on 2025 promises a smoothly functioning traffic system in the capital.
