Interestingly, it is suspected that a criminal organization from the Netherlands is behind these acts. Investigations were taken over by a special group from the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, which has been active since March 1st.
But the effects of these criminal activities are not only numerical, but also noticeable for the Viennese population. Numerous post offices have taken their ATMs out of service for security reasons. Post, BAWAG and Bank Austria have introduced additional security measures due to the incidents. A spokesman for the postal service said that the foyers of the branches remain open, but the ATMs are marked. BAWAG closes foyers between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. to prevent possible attacks.
