Austrian Concrete Prize 2025: These projects set standards!
The ceremonial awarding of the Austrian Concrete Prize 2025 took place on June 24, 2025 at the Vienna Technical Museum. The award, which is now considered the only construction and architecture award for innovative construction projects with concrete in Austria, honored outstanding projects in three categories, with a record number of 82 construction projects submitted this year. This represents a notable increase compared to the 25 competitions in 2023, as wohnnet.at reported.
The award winners come from a wide geographical range, including Vienna, Burgenland and Styria. The expert jury, led by Anja Fischer, evaluated the projects according to criteria such as sustainability, functionality and innovative use of concrete. Insights into the jury's decisions give you the feeling that concrete is not just a building material, but also a future-oriented element of building culture.
The winning projects
The award in the residential construction category went to the impressive Campo Breitenlee project in Vienna-Donaustadt. Here, concrete is not only used as a building material, but also as part of a plus-energy district that combines ecological, social and technical aspects. The innovative use of thermal storage capability offers sustainable solutions for heating and cooling and enables a 100% supply of renewable energy. This pioneering project was realized by the Architectural firm Treberspurg & Partner in partnership with Synn Architekten and the ÖVW Austrian People's Housing Association.
The Future Art Lab of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna triumphed in the educational and administrative building category. Planned by Pichler and Traupmann Architects, the structure represents an innovative use of concrete that is specifically designed to meet acoustic requirements. This measure allows for optimal sound insulation and is therefore a boon for music production and other artistic practices.
In the area of revitalization, the Mattersburg Cultural Center was honored, a successful example of the respectful renovation of a brutalist building from 1976. Attention was not only paid to the original architecture; A new concrete building expands the face of the center and reflects a clear sustainable claim. The renovation was carried out by Wopfinger Transportbeton Ges.m.b.H., which also strives to find environmentally friendly solutions.
The importance of concrete
Concrete has established itself as a fascinating building material that can be used not only functionally, but also aesthetically and sustainably. These projects set new standards and inspire the entire industry to rethink concrete. It becomes clear that the building material is able to promote environmentally friendly solutions while offering innovative design options. Initiatives like this RTI circular economy initiative of the BMK support this trend by promoting innovative technologies and systemic approaches for a circular economy with a budget of 10 million euros.
If you take all of these developments into account, it becomes clear that the construction industry in Austria is on a promising path. The next award ceremony for the Austrian Concrete Prize will take place in 2027, and the anticipation will certainly continue to grow in the coming period.
