Sustainable building in Aspern: visions of the future for the Seestadt!

The future of construction is in focus: On November 11, 2025, an exciting dialogue on sustainable construction took place in the aspern Seestadt. The event was organized by the Austrian Society for Sustainable Building (ÖGNB) in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency and Vienna 3420 aspern Development AG. Robert Grüneis, board member of Wien 3420, welcomed the participants and introduced the new Seestadt technology center, which has just opened.

The tz3 building received an impressive 943 out of 1000 points and the coveted ÖGNB Gold certification. The participants had the opportunity to visit the innovative premises, which offer space for research and development-oriented young companies. In a thematic talk with experts such as Beate Lubitz-Prohaska from the ÖGNB, Michael Haugeneder from ATP sustain GmbH and Peter Hinterkörner from Vienna 3420, those present discussed the question: “Is new construction still sustainable?” Fortunately, it turned out that this is definitely possible if planning is resource-efficient and of high quality.

Sustainability as a guideline

Peter Hinterkörner emphasized the compatibility of sustainability and new construction using Seestadt, which is considered a model for ecologically and economically responsible growth. A newly introduced standard called aspern klimafit promotes local renewable energy production and ensures grid utility. Beate Lubitz-Prohaska emphasized how important building certification is for measurable sustainability.

Eight building projects were also honored at the event, seven of which are in Seestadt. These projects meet the ÖGNB's strict quality criteria and are therefore role models for future construction projects:

  • Technologiezentrum 3 (WA Business & Service Center GmbH)
  • ROBIN Seestadt Haus A, B & C (SoReal GmbH)
  • Heimspiel Stiege 1 & 2 (EBG)
  • TRIO.inklusiv (GEWOG)
  • Aspern H6 BF1 (Wiener Städtische Versicherung AG)
  • Aspern H6 BF2 (Aspern H6 BP2 Projektentwicklungs GmbH)
  • Aspern H6 BF3 (APHRODITE Bauträger AG)
  • Aspern H6 BF4 (Schönere Zukunft)

Innovation boost in Vienna

At the event, Rainer Holzer, Head of Real Estate at the Vienna Business Agency, emphasized the close connection between innovation and sustainability that is pursued in every construction project in the Seestadt. Since the first property developer competition, all projects have been quality assured in accordance with the ÖGNB criteria. The current target value is an impressive 800 ÖGNB points.

Particular attention is paid to the aspern monitor, which transparently displays the score of a project in the ÖGNB certification system. This allows those interested to understand how sustainable a construction project is and what progress is being made. These measures impressively show how Vienna is moving towards a sustainable and future-oriented building culture.
