On June 10, 1912, the Romanian engineer and pilot Aurel Vlaicu won the hearts of aviation enthusiasts at the international aviation meeting in Aspern, not far from Vienna. On this day, Vlaicu showed his extraordinary talent and won several prizes. He secured first place in the target throwing discipline with a projectile from a height of 300 meters and also won second prize for a precise landing on a fixed point. Aurel Vlaicu was born on November 19, 1882 in the village of Binținți, now part of the city of Geoagiu. Even during his school days he showed great technical talent. His teacher encouraged him to attend secondary schools, which ultimately led to his studies at technical universities in Budapest and Munich, where he earned his engineering diploma according to Wikipedia.
But it wasn't just the acquisition of knowledge that shaped Vlaicu's career. After a few jobs, including as an engineer in a car factory, he turned to aviation. In 1909, after building a successful plan, he began designing his first powered aircraft and took part in various competitions. His pursuit of innovation and excellence in aviation was not without consequences; he was posthumously elected to the Romanian Academy and his name is inextricably linked to the history of Romanian aviation. Vlaicu died tragically in a flying accident on September 13, 1913 while attempting to cross the Carpathians.

His influence is still felt today. The largest international airport in Romania is named after him and the Aurel Vlaicu University in Arad also bears his name. His achievements have helped to consolidate the image of Romanian aviation in the world.
