Major fire in Nußdorf-Debant: AT alert activated for several communities!
In the last few hours, a large fire in the Rossbacher waste disposal center in Nußdorf-Debant has kept the region in suspense. On June 28th at 1:25 p.m., the emergency services reported the risk of fire, which could now spread to neighboring communities due to the heavy smoke and a change in wind direction. That's why the Matrei fire department triggered an AT alert for several places in the area, as reported by 5min.at.
The following communities are affected by the AT alert: Leisach, Assling, Amlach, and Oberlienz. The warning also remains active for the towns of Nußdorf-Debant, Lienz-Stadt, Iselsberg-Stronach, Lavant, Tristach, Dölsach and Nikolsdorf. The public is urged to close all windows and doors and to avoid the area in the immediate vicinity of the scene. Ventilation and air conditioning systems should also be switched off to minimize inhalation exposure.
Difficult extinguishing work
Numerous fire departments have been on duty since yesterday afternoon to bring the fire under control. According to information from Osttiroler Bote, around 130 emergency services were initially on site. This number has now increased: last night, 13 fire departments with a total of 29 vehicles and 210 emergency services fought against the flames. The fire department's goal is to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other buildings.
However, the extinguishing work is extremely dangerous. On Saturday afternoon there was even an explosion during the operations, which further complicated the situation. Disaster relief trains with tank fire engines, pumps and hose material have currently arrived from Upper Carinthia as well as from Kitzbühel and Kufstein to support the measures.
Smoke development and effects
The heavy smoke development is visible throughout the entire region, even as far as Sachsenburg in the Drautal. There is an acrid smell of burnt plastic. This development prompted the authority not only to issue the AT alert, but also to close the railway line from Lienz to Oberdrauburg and to set up a replacement rail service. The public is again urged to avoid the area and keep up to date with current information.
These incidents are not just locally significant; they also take a look at the challenges facing societal security in general. CTIF's fire service statistics report provides relevant data and insights into how fire risks have trended in recent years. The collected statistics show that dealing with fire phenomena in urban centers is always the focus of the fire department (CTIF).
Current reports and developments will continue to be monitored and published in order to provide the public with the best possible information. Stay safe and follow the recommendations of the authorities.
