U4 renovation in Vienna-Mitte: platform closed for four weeks for modernization!
Attention residents and commuters! From Monday, November 3, 2025, the renovation of the U4 platform at the Landstraße/Wien Mitte station in the direction of Hütteldorf will begin. This measure, which will last until December 5th, means that trains will not stop in Vienna-Mitte. Wiener Linien has announced that the work is extensive and that the station will be both more modern and safer once completed. Old asphalt slabs will be replaced with light granite and the guidance system for visually impaired passengers will be renewed. In addition, the U4 will remain in full operation throughout the duration of the construction work, which is a reassuring sign for users, as the numerous daily passengers can continue to travel without major interruptions.
Another important point is the recently completed renovation of the platform towards Heiligenstadt, which began on September 22nd and was completed on November 2nd. From Monday, passengers can look forward to the fact that the trains will stop again as scheduled in Landstrasse/Wien-Mitte, while there will be a diversion in the direction of Hütteldorf. A small detour, but one that could be worth it because the new facilities bring a breath of fresh air into the outdated station.
Various modernization work
The ongoing work is part of Wiener Linien’s major modernization offensive “Network especially”. This initiative envisages that a total of 223 million euros will be invested in the infrastructure by 2024. At around 100 locations in Vienna, the need to maintain and expand the public transport network is being addressed with hammers, flex and excavator shovels. Many of the measures are hardly noticed by passengers because they are mostly planned during non-operational times or in such a way that daily operations are not affected. Another plus: the work often brings improvements to the surrounding area, such as the creation of cycle paths and green spaces.
But where exactly is modernization taking place? Among other things, track construction work is planned on Kreuzgasse, Wiedner Hauptstrasse and Universitätsstrasse. The subway is also affected, as a number of switch replacements and repairs are planned for the U4, including the replacement at Leopoldau and the renewal of the turning system in Heiligenstadt. All of these measures are necessary to keep the 6th largest tram network in the world running efficiently.
What that means
Of course, with such large projects it becomes clear that there may be short-term restrictions. Wiener Linien points out that some modernizations will result in an adjustment to the timetables. Passengers are therefore well advised to find out about the current timetables, which are always available. Residents usually only have to get used to construction sites in their area once, as the large construction sites also improve the entire section of road for many years and thus offer sustainable renewal.
Where a little patience is required, optimized mobility for the future awaits at the same time. The work on the Vienna lines proves that the city of Vienna is not just standing still, but is investing in the coming years as a modern urban center. It will be exciting to see what positive changes the next few months will bring us.
