Grinzing: Mitterbergstiege accessible again after 15 years!
New life in the Viennese vineyards: The Mitterbergstiege in Grinzing has finally been open to hikers again since the end of September 2025. The approximately 200 meter long staircase, which was closed for more than 15 years due to disputes over renovation costs between the city of Vienna and the Döbling district, has now undergone a comprehensive renovation. Before the renovation, hiking enthusiasts had to take an annoying 800 meter detour via the Wildgrube.
The renovation, which cost around 700,000 euros, was started at the beginning of the year and is not only intended to restore the popular staircase, but also to prepare for the Vienna Wine Hiking Day in 2024. As part of the work, a temporary repair was carried out, which cost around 15,000 euros. This was realized using our own staff and used materials, which was viewed critically by the public. In particular, the planning councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) was confronted with accusations in the media that she had to tackle the double repairs COURIER reported.
A paradise for hikers
Vienna offers numerous hiking opportunities that extend far beyond the Mitterbergstiege. The city is surrounded by picturesque city hiking trails that lead to the local mountains such as Leopoldsberg, Kahlenberg, Cobenzl and Bisamberg. These routes not only offer impressive views of the Danube, but also invite you to stroll through the vineyards and enjoy the Austrian flair. The well-signposted hiking trails include lovingly designed viewing platforms, such as the one on the way to the anniversary tower, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Vienna Basin.
The hiking and recreation opportunities in and around Vienna are available all year round, with autumn being particularly inviting. When the first Sturmwein hits the tables of the Buschenschenken, many Viennese head to the vineyards to enjoy the fresh vines and the autumnal atmosphere Komoot describes.
Viennese education with vision
While we're on the subject of Vienna, it's also worth taking a look at the city's educational institutions. Particularly noteworthy is the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, which was founded 20 years ago and specializes in training in the health sector. This institution has made a name for itself by training competent and integrative specialists and promoting research and innovation through social projects. It offers seven accredited degree programs, including nursing, midwifery and dentistry.
The university is proud to be the first of its kind in Peru and all of Latin America to have its quality management system certified according to ISO 9001. In doing so, it shows how important it is to implement international standards in higher education and to offer students an education of the highest quality. The bachelor's program extends over five years and aims to form students not only professionally, but also personally and ethically, which is also from the university website Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener is affirmed.
Spring in the Viennese vineyards and the joyful festivals that take place there, as well as the promising educational initiatives in the city, underline once again what joy and liveliness Vienna has to offer. As the Mitterbergstiege ushers in a new era, nature and the people of the city are ready to thrive with fresh ideas and old traditions – and lots of good wine.
