Barbara Novak: Vienna's first financial city councilor in turbulent times!

Something is happening in Vienna! The SPÖ politician Barbara Novak, who has served as state party secretary since 2018, will take over the city's financial agenda with immediate effect. Her predecessor Peter Hanke left behind some challenges that Novak must now address. Mayor Michael Ludwig, a close confidante of Novak, is convinced of her suitability for this responsible role. “This will require sweat and tears,” Ludwig aptly stated, but Novak is known for her assertiveness and is highly valued within the party.

The 43-year-old has a solid political career that began in 2001 as a member of the Vienna State Parliament. Her experience also includes speaking for information and communications technology and digitalization policy over almost two decades. She activated projects such as broadband expansion and worked on the further development of the city's e-government offering. “Education and equality are central issues for me,” emphasizes Novak and calls for equal opportunities, especially for women, in all areas of society.

Vienna as a pioneer for equality

Vienna is playing a growing role in the discussion about equality for women in management levels. The Global Leaders Summit, which recently started in the city, will draw international attention on September 19, 2024. This gathering point for 600 managers and real thought leaders will cover topics such as women's equality and the influence of artificial intelligence on modern leadership. “The 'Leadership:Redefined' initiative has been committed to women's economic participation since 2022,” reported the organizers, underlining the need to redefine leadership qualities.

Over 365 women leaders have been featured since 2022, and the initiative has reached more than 8 million women in 96 countries. Nevertheless, the Reykjavík Index for Leadership shows that the road to equality is still long. The index reveals that prejudices against women in leadership positions still exist and that younger generations (18-34 years old) are particularly critical.

Barbara Novak's future and her possible ambitions

The new role in Vienna Holding could not only be exciting for Novak, but also the next step on her political career ladder. Rumors say that she is being brought into play as a possible successor to Mayor Ludwig. If this becomes a reality, she would be the first woman to hold this position in the city's history - a prospect that would certainly have a lot of approval within and outside the party.

In her new role, Barabara Novak will also be responsible for digitalization, finance, economics, labor and international affairs. There is great hope that she will have the necessary “skill” to continue to move Vienna forward and at the same time be a role model for many women in politics.

Novak's involvement in politics can also be felt far beyond her direct tasks. Her beginnings in the youth trade unions and as state secretary for the young generation show her long-term commitment to a fair society. With her new position, she could now have a significant influence on Vienna's economic and social future.
