Burgtheater mourns Robert Reinagl: A final curtain call for the star
The Viennese theater landscape has suffered a serious loss. Robert Reinagl, a well-known face at the Burgtheater, died on October 30, 2025 at the age of 57. His death was announced by the Burgtheater, where he was part of the ensemble for over 25 years. Artistic director Stefan Bachmann expressed his condolences and praised Reinagl's humor, commitment and tireless professional ethic. “A talented actor and a fine personality has left us,” said Bachmann in an initial statement.
Born in Vienna, he was born in 1968 and began his artistic career with the Vienna Ensemble under Karl Welunschek. In 1989 he made his debut in George Tabori's play “The Circle” and in Nestroy's “Love Stories and Marriage Matters”. Over the course of his career, Reinagl was active at the Landhaustheater Klagenfurt and the Vereinigte Bühnen Graz, among others, before joining the renowned Burgtheater in 2000.
A life full of stagecraft
Over the years, Reinagl has interpreted numerous roles and worked with well-known directors such as Michael Thalheimer and Barbara Frey. He was last seen in Philip Stölzl's production of the classic “Liliom” by Ferenc Molnár in 2024. In addition to his acting work, Reinagl was involved in the Burgtheater works council for over 20 years, which underlines his deep commitment to the theater community.
Reinagl wasn't just active on stage. He also made a name for himself as a singer and appeared in various film and television productions, for example in “Tatort” and “Soko Donau”. His role in the TV comedy “Bösterreich” in 2014 is also particularly memorable. From 2004 to 2006 he passed on his knowledge of role design at the Private University Conservatory of Vienna and from 2013 to 2017 he was a lecturer in speech design at the Max Reinhardt Seminar.
Fight against the disease
The artist's health was less known. According to reports, Reinagl suffered from severe lung cancer, which certainly posed an additional challenge in the final phase of his life. Despite his illness, he remained loyal to the theater world and worked tirelessly for his artistic projects.
There is great sadness for Robert Reinagl, not only in the Burgtheater, but also in the entire Viennese cultural scene. A talented actor, a good colleague and a person with heart said goodbye far too soon. We will miss him and always honor his legacy in the colorful world of theater.
