Thomas Hausner will head orthopedics at UKH Salzburg from October!
Exciting times lie ahead for the Salzburg Accident Hospital: From October 1, 2025, Prim. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Thomas Hausner takes over the management of the department for orthopedics and traumatology. The Salzburg native brings valuable experience with him, as he previously managed the Vienna-Brigittenau trauma center for a long time. His expertise in hand surgery and sports traumatology makes him a sought-after personality in the Austrian healthcare system. Press release reports that Dr. Hausner has also been working as a private lecturer at the Paracelsus Medical University of Salzburg since 2015.
The Salzburg Accident Hospital is one of the largest specialized facilities for traumatology in western Austria and southern Bavaria, where around 40,000 patients are treated as outpatients and over 5,000 as inpatients every year. With a dedicated team of around 400 employees, we are well positioned on site. Dr. Hausner will gradually take over the department from the interim management, working closely with the board members Dr. Markus Garber, Dr. Siegfried Kornberger and Dr. Gernot Hlawaty work together.
A strong network for traumatology
The challenges in traumatology are particularly great, which is why good cooperation is essential. In Salzburg and the surrounding regions - including Upper Austria, Tyrol, Styria and Bavaria - between 450 and 500 people are treated in the shock room every year after serious accidents. SALK emphasizes that the Salzburg Trauma Network, founded in 2014, pursues an innovative and effective strategy with a more than 90 percent chance of survival after serious accidents. This is based on graduated care, clearly defined transfer strategies and continuous consultations between those involved.
The network includes two national trauma centers: the Salzburg University Hospital and the Salzburg Accident Hospital. The Innsbruck University Hospital has also been part of the network since 2024, while regional trauma centers such as the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Klinikum and other facilities in Braunau and Tamsweg play an important role.
Innovative treatment methods
In the field of orthopedics, the Salzburg Accident Hospital covers the entire spectrum of conservative and surgical diseases. The Orthoteam Salzburg informs that the goals are clear diagnoses and individual therapy plans. Various conservative therapies are used, from pain treatment to infiltrations to non-surgical methods such as shock wave and hyaluronic therapies.
But surgical medicine is not neglected either: keyhole surgery for large joints such as hips and knees as well as specialized endoprosthetic care are important parts of the treatment spectrum. Joint replacement is seen as a last resort to help patients achieve a better quality of life and freedom from pain.
The coming months will be an exciting time for Dr. Thomas Hausner and his future tasks at the accident hospital in Salzburg. His predecessors, including OA Dr. Thomas Beer, who will take over interim management of the Brigittenau location in Vienna, laid the foundation stone. The positions in Vienna are to be filled soon - with the aim of filling them at the beginning of 2026.
