Viennese kebab for just 1 euro: mega promotion attracts long queues!

The catering industry isn't having an easy time of it at the moment, especially in Vienna. Rising food prices are putting an enormous strain on the industry. But some restaurants are trying to find innovative ways to retain their customers. An example of this is the Dönermeister branch on Alsergrund, which recently started its “1 euro campaign”. To celebrate the restaurant's five-year anniversary, guests can enjoy a chicken sandwich for just one euro on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This campaign has already caused long queues in front of the kebab shop, which has temporarily made the sidewalk unusable for passers-by, as heute.at reports.

Dönermeister's successful concept is no coincidence. The chain has been operating for 13 years with a clear focus on premium kebabs. The new flagship store was recently opened at Opernring 1, which not only represents a showcase for the products, but also serves as a test location for new dishes. Overall, owners Kadir Sicimoglu, Ulas Celikkol and Ekrem Tütüncü rely on high-quality ingredients and creative sauces to stand out from the competition. The Berlin kebab priced at 7 euros and the steak kebab for 8.50 euros are among the flagship products of the new location, reports meinbezirk.at.

Challenges and price adjustments

Despite the success, the catering industry remains under pressure. The Gastronomy Association draws attention to the enormous price increases for food and energy, which are putting a heavy burden on the gastronomy sector. A decisive factor is the sharp increase in energy prices, which has increased the share of industry revenues to 15% since 2019. Around 36% of intermediate consumption comes from energy-intensive sectors, as the WKO reports.

Staple foods are particularly affected. In December 2022, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices were 16.2% higher year-on-year. The price increases for coffee even amounted to 22% within a year. These developments are forcing many catering establishments to adjust their prices in order to make ends meet. They try to counteract this through energy-saving measures and more price-conscious purchasing, but are often unable to completely curb inflation.

The different approaches of the restaurants, such as the affordable offers at Dönermeister or the quality offensive in the flagship store, show that there is a lot of movement in Viennese gastronomy. It remains to be seen whether the 1 euro campaign and the upgrade of the offer are suitable for meeting the challenges of the increased cost of living. What is certain, however, is that Vienna remains a melting pot of culinary diversity!
