Vienna impresses with 7.1 million overnight stays – new record level!
Vienna will remain one of the favorite cities for travelers from all over the world in 2025. From January to May there were over 7.1 million overnight stays, a pleasing increase of 7% compared to the previous year. Even though May saw a small decrease of 1% compared to the same month last year with around 1.716 million overnight stays, the overall figures show that the city is still very popular. Wiener Districtblatt reports that this is primarily due to the large increases in guests from Italy (+21%), Spain (+13%) and Ukraine (+33%).
However, the decline in German (*-17%*) and Polish guests (*-27%*) in recent months should not go unmentioned. This is a warning signal that the tourism industry should keep an eye on. Nevertheless, Austria remains the most important source market for Vienna with 308,000 overnight stays in May, even if there was a decline of 3%. The country of Germany is particularly affected, suffering the biggest decline in May with 332,000 overnight stays.
Sales development in Vienna's hotels
The financial figures are consistently positive, with net sales in the hotel industry in particular reaching around 133 million euros in April 2025, an increase of 23% compared to April 2024. From January to April, sales totaled an impressive 358.8 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 13% compared to the previous year. These developments bring a breath of fresh air to the city and demonstrate the strength of Vienna's tourism.
In May, around 80,200 hotel beds were available in Vienna - 4,000 more than the year before. Room occupancy was 74% and bed occupancy was 57%. These values have fallen slightly compared to the previous year, indicating that utilization can be boosted again in the coming months. The current overall utilization is so far below the level of the previous year.
A look into the future
After the challenges of the pandemic, Vienna has returned to its path to success. Tourism and travel statistics, comprehensive and well documented, regularly show the development of the accommodation market. The surveys carried out by Statistics Austria are of great importance not only for the Viennese hotel industry, but for the entire European region. The figures for overnight stays and guest origins are on the agenda of many professional associations and institutions that are committed to the sustainable development of the tourism sector. WKO regularly brings relevant information about these developments to the table.
It remains to be seen in the coming months whether Vienna will be able to overcome the challenges associated with the reduced numbers from Germany and Poland. However, trends over the last few months show that the city is still a magnet for international visitors who enjoy Vienna's cultural offerings, history and hospitality.
