Vienna ensures faster surgery appointments: central control from 2026!

Waiting times for operations in Vienna will soon be a thing of the past. From the end of 2026, the city will launch a new system for the central control of surgery appointments, which is specifically focused on hip and knee surgeries. The Vienna Health Association (WIGEV) and the Vinzenz Kliniken Vienna have joined forces to significantly improve medical care in the capital. [5min.at].

The clinics currently still have the freedom to assign their surgery appointments independently, which often leads to long waiting times. The new central operating room control is intended to achieve a more uniform and efficient use of operating room capacities. The advantages are obvious: faster access to needed operations, more transparent appointments and a better distribution of patients with more complex medical needs are just some of the goals.

How does the new system work?

The central system stipulates that weekly fixed operating times are provided by specialized clinics. At the same time, the clinics retain their own quotas in order to be able to carry out medically necessary procedures flexibly. The Vienna Health Association and Vinzenz Kliniken Vienna plan to transfer experience from this model to other types of operations, which should also benefit patients with different waiting times. The system primarily focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty, as waiting times are often the highest here. But that's just the beginning: The plan is to expand the central operating room control to other clinics and types of operations, so that an overall improvement in health care in Vienna will ultimately be achieved.

A step in the right direction

This groundbreaking initiative not only improves medical care in the city, but also strengthens cooperation between the various hospital providers. ORF Vienna emphasizes that the close coordination between WIGEV and the Vinzenz Kliniken is intended to ensure more transparent planning. This ensures that every patient receives the treatment they need quickly and easily.

There is still a lot to be done before central operating theater control is implemented in 2026. However, it is generally seen as a step in the right direction to make the healthcare system in Vienna even more effective and user-friendly.
