Traffic jam hell in Austria: return journey and events hold up traffic!

If you want to enjoy the last days of summer on the streets of Austria, you should be prepared for a stressful return journey. Today, August 25, 2025, the end of the holidays in eastern Austria as well as parts of the Netherlands, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will lead to significant traffic jams on south-north and east-west connections within the country. The situation is tense, especially at the borders with Germany and in front of the Karawanken Tunnel, Hügel and Nickelsdorf OEMTC reported in detail.

According to the traffic forecasts, there may be long waiting times on the main traffic jam routes, especially in front of tunnels and toll areas on the Tauern Autobahn (A10). But delays are also to be expected on other motorways such as the Brenner Motorway (A13) and the Pyhrn Motorway (A9). Here is an overview of the affected routes:

  • Brenner Autobahn (A13)
  • Pyhrn Autobahn (A9)
  • West Autobahn (A1)

Bottlenecks

Road users should pay particular attention to the following bottlenecks:

  • A1: von Grenze Walserberg bis Knoten Salzburg
  • A2: zwischen Gleisdorf und Sinabelkirchen, ab Guntramsdorf Richtung Wien
  • A4: vor Grenze Nickelsdorf, ab Schwechat Richtung Wien
  • A9: Knoten St. Michael, vor Gleinalm Tunnel und Grenze Spielfeld
  • A10: im gesamten Verlauf vor Tunnelbereichen und Mautstellen
  • A11: vor Karawanken Tunnel
  • A12: vor Grenze Kufstein
  • A13: zwischen Matrei und Nößlach, zwischen Schönberg und Innsbruck Ost
  • A23: im gesamten Verlauf

But that's not all: In addition to the general return traffic, there are also numerous major events planned for the coming weekend, which will also cause traffic problems. The Ötztaler Cycling Marathon and the Ironman Zell am See-Kaprun will cause stops and even closures on August 31st, for example on Pinzgauer Straße (B311) and Hochkönig Straße (B164).

In addition, the popular Kärnten Läuft is taking place and will affect the roads around Lake Wörthersee and the Velden-Ost motorway junction (A2). The horticultural fair in Tulln, which runs from August 28th to September 1st, could also lead to delays on Tullner Straße (B19).

Emergency lane and support

For the safety of all road users, the ÖAMTC draws attention to the fact that the emergency lane should be created in order to enable the rescue workers quick access. This is particularly crucial in traffic jam areas. ÖAMTC traffic jam advisor Herbert Thaler will be on site between Walserberg and St. Michael im Lungau on August 30th to offer support and draw attention to the traffic situation.
